You're loving joking right? $10k gets you a pretty drat nice car with only a couple of years under its belt in California and Texas, so long as you avoid Toyota and Honda (The T/H tax is just nuts). Talk to me when you're looking at $1-2k shitboxes and wondering how long they'll limp along.

I've managed almost a year out of an $1800 Subaru shitbox with $500 in repairs and deferred maint... so far *cries in a mix of Denso and Jatco*. I'm not counting the 2 oil changes in that though. Or the brake pads... or wiper blades. Typical maint I don't count, only severely deferred maint (I think I'm up to $150-200 in regular maint? pads, rotors, wipers, oil changes, ATF, etc). And Subarus aren't exactly known for being reliable once they get old. :v: cries in head gasket and howling diffs

Just buy a nice used sports car, dude. Let someone else eat the depreciation, but you're at the age where you can afford to do something nice for yourself, you're only going to get 'more' sensible as you get older, which in the real world means doing fewer fun things and worrying more about money, and also it's more embarrassing to do a burnout in your Corvette when you're 77 than it is at 42 or whatever you are.

Our current personal strategy is to reduce monthly expenditures as much as possible and increase liquid assets. We’ve got about a full year’s combined income existing basically as cash right now, and I’m not sure it’s gonna be enough. The big crash in the economy has not yet been fully felt, and if either of us lost our income it could be a protracted time in which we gotta keep this house running. Once I finish the refi we’re in right now I’m likely to take out a big HELOC as a safety. Won’t borrow nothin from it unless I have to, but the time to get the credit is now, not after one of us is without income.

Anyway the wife keeps telling me to sign up for a new Bronco, cause I admitted I like it, but I’m very happy driving my 93 Accord. I don’t even drive anywhere anymore.

The truck that was basically one of my life goals as a lifelong car guy has been totaled by a guy who, at best, drove while seriously ill and passed out while driving. Everything was perfect and the way I wanted it. Fabtech 4" coilover external reservoir lift kit, 35" tires, Bronze Method 308s. 27k miles. Pristine condition.

Anyone have any tips for dealing with the insurance company on value? Will be dealing with my own insurance company but they'll go after his for it so maybe they won't be total pricks.

I've got the original window sticker and ~$10,000 worth of receipts that will hopefully help a little. Replacement cost (I know I won't get this I'm just sayin) if I were to go buy an identically equipped 2020 and then do the same mods to it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $75,000. And I know they don't like to pay for poo poo you put on it but I'm hoping the fact that it'll be his insurance and is the result of negligence will help.

They're probably going to give me some lovely lowball that will mean it cost me $30,000 to drive this truck for 3 years.

RIP buddy, you gave your life to save mine.

Really depends if your insurance policy covers aftermarket parts. Depending on if those parts survived might be better to buy the truck back, but a new one and move the aftermarket parts over.

Talk to your insurance company, but be prepared to get told no. Most insurance companies will not replace modified parts without having it in the policy previously.

yeah if you tell your insurance carrier in advance and have stated value on the truck, you have a shot.

now you're basically saying "hey the thing you thought cost $50,000 and so therefore you were charging me accordingly, well it's actually worth $75,000. i want $75,000 to replace it" - not really fair to the carrier either.

That's fair. Friend of mine bought a very inexpensive-seeming CL600 with the v12. Shock from the $240 parts costs for new spark plugs (24 in total) rapidly turned to sorrow as the suspension continually hosed up and the horrible thing settled into a near permanent life on the lift. I think the point at which he matched the purchase price of the car in repairs it was cut loose at a loss. I think a manual 8-series is better in that regard at least.

This is the way to do it. Let someone else take the profound depreciation. I see no benefit for a brand new car over one that's a few years old with 40k miles on it, if it's been properly maintained / cared for. It makes selection a pain, but you cut down your economic risk / damage.

This is true, too. If you buy a car that was $70k 10 years ago, it's going to need parts for a $70k car that's 10 years old.
