Nix Panicus posted:And as mentioned earlier, all the inmates who were trained and experienced firefighters while in prison are ineligible to become firefighters on release, because they don't hire felons. So California is always chronically short on trained firefighters because they can't hire felons, which means they need to use slave labor felons to make up the shortfall. guess who's fighting against it quote:For several years, state lawmakers have considered various bills to change the law so that inmate firefighters arent disqualified by their criminal records. The most recent version, AB 1211 by Assemblywoman Eloise Reyes (D-San Bernardino), was shelved early in the session after pushback from firefighters associations. The bill will be taken up again next year.

My girlfriend routinely asks if we can move out of state. No! She doesn't like the seasons and she wants some place that's warm and sunny most of the year. Hell no! California, fires; Florida, hurricanes; Georgia, the actual mouth of hell; the Caribbean, hurricanes and equatorial; Texas, literally Texas; Colorado, okay maybe Colorado.

While we're on the prison tangent, I'm going to hearken back to LF days and recommend The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander to anyone who either doesn't know or wants to know more about the prison-industrial complex. It's an excellent overview and will make you extremely angry.

Kinda optimistic of them to suggest it'll remain a Cat 1, seeing as every sub-Cat 3 hurricane that touches the Gulf almost immediately goes up two notches in grade, at least while it's in open water.

The OSHA thread in GBS served up these videos. It's insane. Me flicking forward through the first one: "Okay, sure, thats a bit windy. Wow, that's a lot of branches flying past. Okay, that tree in the front lawn is now gone. Holy poo poo, that very large tree now in the front lawn wasn't there a second ago."
