She played guitar in post-rock band Red Sparowes and I think she's been in other bands too.

It's such a good sound.

It's like they took the bluesy heavy riffs from Agoraphobic Nosebleed's EP Arc and added just the right type of pitchshifted gurgling growls to them.

Love it.

Singer/guitarist who does a lot of diverse styles and has a bunch of different projects. Post-rock in Red Sparowes, post-punk/shoegaze in The Nocturnes, hard alternative in Marriages, darkwave in Headless Prince of Zolpidem, and most of her solo stuff is doomy gothic-folk (sort of like Chelsea Wolfe's non-industrial stuff). But she's very metal-adjacent, and she's opened for Alcest, Cult of Luna, Deafheaven, Thou, and a bunch of other metal bands. Sometimes she joins her headliners onstage for a few songs, and that's how the Thou collaboration came about.

It's a cliche to start a metal track with a sample, but it's a cliche I love. What's your favorite/the best one?

I'm a big fan of how corny the one is in "Inhuman" by Origin. "Anyone who isn't dead or from another plane of existence would do well to cover their ears... right about now!"

when I saw Sleep live they turned off the lights and music and played about 5 minutes of NASA/space radio chatter before they came on stage and it sounds corny but it was really cool

Nehru the Damaja

I feel like samples being corny is what makes it fun. "The Optimist" by Skinless starts with what I'm like 99% sure is Vince McMahon shouting "LIFE SUCKS AND THEN YOU DIE"

It's so perfectly dumb.

Mortician - Bloodcraving is pretty much the ultimate opening sample, in my book.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FK4-KHqT4k
It's from When a Stranger Calls, easily the best part of the movie.

"You really scared me, if that's what you wanted... is that what you wanted?"
"No."
"What do you want?"
"Your.. blood... all over meeeeeeeeee...."

Mortician are the kings of cool samples. Every now and then they run a little too long, but for the most part they are perfect.

I do love listening to the launch sequence before blasting off with sleep.

Favorite use of a sample in a metal song for me goes to Neurosis - Lost.

“Are you lost?”

“Yes”

“Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well, yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.”

All of the ones on Dopethrone. Vinum Sabbathi gets all the play because it's great for opening an album, but the one I love most is just the "heh heh heh hmmmm" before the title track kicks in.

Honorable mentions are the Exorcist III sample in "Crown of Horns" by Cryptopsy and Harding's rant from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in "Shadows That Move" by Mastodon.

Oh, and "Didn't you say...Jesus was coming?" to kick off "Higher Coward."
