Watched Spirited Away for the first time and...I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. The animation is very nice but the plot point of why Haku got hurt and how that got resolved rather easily, Haku changing from a dragon to a boy midflight because of his name being uttered and the presence of the noname that didn't add much all puzzled me. Is this one of Ghibli's weaker works?

I’ve seemingly struck out on ghibli films as the other one I’ve watched is Ponyo though I remember enjoying KiKi though that may be my memory playing tricks with me.

i still think spirited away is the best miyazaki one. that and whisper of the heart and princess kaguya are the only ghiblis i particularly like most of their films are basically animation showcases with simple, loosely constructed stories so if you're looking for something tighter narratively you're in the wrong place

IMO: the best miyazaki is nausicaa manga, and it's not even a competition, this despite me greatly prefering anime over manga in general the best ghibli is definitely porco rosso, with whisper of the heart and mononoke being pretty drat good too. whisper of the heart was my favourite in high school, but as i get older porco rosso just keeps getting better somehow???? nausicaa anime gets a mention because while it's too short to do much with the setting, it's a really well made introduction to the insanely good manga oscar ultimately going to spirited away out of all the stuff is, however, predictable. it was the mainstream worldwide hit after all
