Katalepsis: Wait, so 6+ months passed between last chapter and this one? It feels like an unusual place for a timeskip, if only because the oncoming Raine/Heather/Zheng weirdness was horrible and incredibly awkward, which is where that story often thrives. ^^

I'd actually gotten some feedback and changed it to make it clearer, but that still seems to be an issue. This is a three-week gap, not six months.

Ooh okay, gotcha... the line that threw me was "Glasswick tower came down six months later"- I think technically the whole story is Heather retroactively narrating, but I tend to forget that so my default assumption was that the narrator's voice was Heather sitting in the creepy tentacle interrogation basement six months later, thinking about recent events in the exciting world of urban redevelopment. Edit: Oh and since most of my comments are editorial, lemme remind everyone that in a dark world full of bad litRPGs and reveling in misery, Katalepsis is the happiest eldritch horror serial out there and more people should give it a try. ^^ Omi no Kami fucked around with this message at 04:05 on Sep 6, 2020 |

PracGuide: I like that it explained in more detail why Catherine rejected Hakram's idea. Her reasoning made perfect sense; the benefit is a more nebulous one that wouldn't apply much until later in the future, and it would end up being completely pointless if Black ends up winning the Civil War.

Artificial Jelly is weird. The author is actively trying to get his patreon income high enough to quit his job and the story he chose to write has now had two "oops half your readers just dropped the story" moments, while normally authors in that position seem to be terrified of doing anything that might lose them a reader.

It does this thing I see a lot in amateur web stories, where the story starts off super-cutesy and wholesome, then veers into super-angsty victimization porn and starts schizophrenically oscillating between "uwu (✿◠‿◠) i'm a cute smol ٩(◕‿◕。)۶ tee hee let's be fwiends " and "n-nnno p-please why are you h-hurting m-me s-stop". And if the author was smart, they'd pick one and very consciously veer away from anything that might lead to the other.

Megazver posted:Can anyone still reading Cinnamon Bun explain what the hell the noises that Awen makes are supposed to be? She's an anime harem member. It's a cute affectionate sound. I suspect it's a play on "uwu" and her name, Awen. Someone whose more into anime than me could probably explain it better.

I mean, I understand that much. I just have no idea what the gently caress the actual sound is supposed to be and why you'd actually keep moaning(?) it.

It is supposed to represent someone opening their mouth and starting to speak before they're sure what they're going to say and so just making a wordless sound. It's basically a cutesy "um". There is a reason why written dialog does not normally contain all the ums that real speech does.

Not more Flos, boo! What have we done to deserve this? Last couple weeks of Wandering Inn have been brutal. Tons of Ryoka, Flos, more Ryoka, and a couple long breaks in the middle too. Isn’t 2020 bad enough already? I’m not really feeling the last few Practical Guide chapters either, the wind-up for this campaign just seems interminable which is weird when we started with a huge time skip. I probably need to just start catching up with Katalepsis, which is always enjoyable.

Normally I stick to Japanese stuff but have been on tear through english language stuff on royal road lately. Azarinth Healer was one that had sat around for a while without really sounding appealing but that I loved when I finally got around to reading it. There's a pretty good amount of worldbuilding, and the MC's gimmick of punching things while being nearly unkillable works pretty well. It also does a good job of kind of catching that spirit of adventure I've only seen a few other series nail, where there isn't necessarily a pressing quest or overall conflict driving the plot, but rather that the MC is just free to go at their own pace and explore the world. Blue Core also turned out to be surprisingly better than I expected it to be. I'm a sucker for dungeon core stuff, and this one had some neat tricks. The gimmick of the MC only really being able to communicate through one character gives it a unique dynamic, too. Never Die Twice is another one that's well put together, with a charming MC who you're never sure if he's evil or not. They do a good job of justifying the normal "dungeon" sorts of features without giving over to the silly status menu LitRPG stuff most of the genre does. The decision to base it all in Norse myth also gives it some nice depth. Magic-Smithing was a nice little find. It has a decent little bit of action and drama baked into it considering that it's still set within a tiny remote village. Pretty short for now but I'm keeping an eye on it. The Abyssal Dungeon has some good promise but is a bit lacking for drama. I like the premise but few of the characters really grew on me. The Queen's Hound was interesting but the MC never really grew on me and it overall feels like it's moving a bit too slowly I'll probably come back to it someday. Thieves' Dungeon is pretty bog standard dungeon stuff for now, but as I mentioned I tend to like that sort of stuff. It hasn't really stood out per se, but I'm a little disappointed it seems to be on a super long hiatus. Still kind of coming off the high from binging Azarinth and am looking for the next thing to grab me. Everybody Loves Large Chests, Dungeon Robotics, Forge of Destiny, and Mother of Learning are all ones I loved but fell behind on a couple years ago, so maybe I'll reread one of them.

Bakanogami posted:Normally I stick to Japanese stuff but have been on tear through english language stuff on royal road lately. Updates have slowed down a lot (the author seems to be unable to find themselves a stable situation and stay there, plus they have a handful of stories that they like to jump between), but you might like There is No Epic Loot Here, Only Puns. Girl gets reborn as a dungeon core, but she refuses to be a murder farm and things start to break because of that. It's mostly silly, but there is a larger plot going on around her, and she has an important part to play in it. If you do like that, you might like some of the author's other stuff too. I particularly enjoy a couple of their fan fictions on Space Battles. Aces and Jokers Based off Worm. I'd never read Worm (and don't really intend to, I don't currently enjoy darker stuff), but while it would absolutely help if I had I caught on quick enough. A young woman falls through a wall to find herself in Worm's Brockton Bay. She's read the story, so she knows what an absolute poo poo show is probably waiting for her just around the corner, and decides she's going to try and stay out of the story's path. It doesn't work, of course, and things get derailed. Spirit of the Gamer (rewrite) A young man dies in a fire, but wakes up in the world of Bleach with a snarky Gamer system. He tries to stay out of the story at first, but keeps winding up interacting with side characters. He's not entirely happy with how things wind up for them in the story, so he adopts a "Mystical Hobo Mentor" attitude and gives them a bit of a hand in growth so they might not get sidelined or killed. Seems like the first 20-odd chapters of dungeon crawler carl are being taken down, in return for it being on kindle unlimited? Might be worth reading them now if you've been putting it off. I can't imagine it's gonna be great for them, I know I absolutely wouldn't have bothered with rummaging through amazon to find it, if I even had unlimited... But I guess it brings in more cash?

Uh..Kaiju isn’t funny at all and isn’t much like Carl except for the existential horror that is basically in everything he writes. It’s actually pretty cool if you have some tolerance for body horror.

The second I kind of understand, but for the first I feel like you’d have to be wilfully ignoring... the entire text of the story up to that point? Which is wholly consumed by Gell’s hatred for the outsiders and their repeated (from her perspective) callous butchery of her and her family. Like I don’t think it was ever a cute, happy story beyond a chapter or two.
