-FB partnership with Ray-ban to do their AR glasses.

-90hz mode confirmed for Quest 1 with Link , next year

-Quest 2: all things known were true, 50% more pixels, xr2, 6gb ram, $300. 10% less weight. no hz data!
-October 13 release date, preorders today
-IPD 3 presets. 58mm, 63mm, 68mm.
-No improved audio.
-Controllers with a bit more space for the thumb (the 'resting' place has a capacitive sensor too), 2-3x the battery duration. Firmer spring for battery, so it should move less inside. Stronger haptic feedback.

-Quest 1 $ data: 35 titles > $1M revenue. $150M on Quest content. Onwards did $1M in 4 days.

-Accessories: elite strap, elite strap with battery, facial interface accessory

-VRCover will be a official partner and will do covers for the Quest 2.
-Logitech will also be partners, producing headphones and even a 'pro gamer headset'.

-Messenger in Quest. I want whatsapp...
-New avatars.
-challenges system. Like a mini tourney with a specified goal. Devs can do them too.

-Prices for Quest 2 in Europe. 349€ for the device. Accs:

-Resolution: 1832x1920. It's a bit less of the true resolution o the screen as there is a 'buffer' to accommodate the ipd.
-Refresh: 90hz but for now things will default at 72hz? Quest 1 games will work at 72hz. There will be a beta option to enable 90ghz at least in home and browser, and later it will be up to devs if develop games for 90hz or 72hz. source: Tested
edit: confirmed here https://www.oculus.com/blog/introducing-oculus-quest-2-the-next-generation-of-all-in-one-vr-gaming/

Weight: 503 grams vs 580 Q1. 625 grams with elite strap.
-Same battery duration.
-Quest 1 games that used Fixed foveated rendering seem to have disabled as the new chip is powerful enough. I guess it's still an option for newer games.

-Myst vr announced, only a brief CG video.
-Jurassic Park, seems Alien Isolation but with velociraptors and celshased.

This tells you the Rift S is as dead as they can make it without openly stating as much. They had to go put in the effort to get the Quest recertified with the FCC to make this happen, even though it'd now openly compete with the Rift S and make it redundant.

It's staggering that Facebook has the field more or less to themselves. Apple is definitely working on something, based on the impressive AR capabilities they're building into iOS, but it's baffling that no other major company is taking VR/AR seriously when it's so obviously the next step for computing.

I gotta criticize this part of the end of HL Alyx: https://youtu.be/jouEppnR_qU?t=1985

I spent 10 minutes just walking around in circles stuck here, only to finally close the game, look up a walkthrough, and see the player get stuck for the exact same 10 minutes and try the same things I did in vain, only to realize you're supposed to PUSH UP THE CEILING so you can crawl under it, something the game has never had you do and is extremely unclear that you're capable of doing. Its a big hunk of metal, all kinds of poo poo has just crashed down around you, there's zero indication that THIS piece of metal is something you can grab and push up to crawl under.

Surprisingly un-intuitive level design from Valve.

Also a bit frustrated that earlier in the level I reached a point where I needed to get up to a crane controller, where I spent 5 minutes stacking barrels that were in the room in order to create a nice clear stair-step up to it, only to have the game refuse to let me climb through the massive open window and instead realized I was supposed to shoot the planks and open the door next to it. I wouldn't be so frustrated if not for the second level of the game forcing you to stack boxes to get through a window, so.... its like the game is lying to you. Again, surprisingly un-intuitive for Valve, who usually polishes these types of things and makes sure there's some kind of strong visual symbol to indicate what you're supposed to be doing.

Note: Quest 2 will launch at 72 Hz, but patch to 90 Hz eventually.

Competitors were caught flat-footed, but they do potentially exist in Samsung with whatever they're working on, and potentially Sony depending on what they decide to do VR-wise next. Facebook's determined to get out in front on the assumption that everyone will just go with them because they be the Apple of VR if they get their foot in the door first. They're never going to get into the virtual office/corporate space though, because who the gently caress would let Facebook have a hardware backdoor into their confidential project spaces? I think their lead is only good so long as there's no serious competition, and the more they piss people off the worse place they'll be when, not if, competition actually emerges in the market.

Of course. But requiring FB integration right now, during a pandemic that has forced a huge portion of the population into remote work, seems oddly unstrategic in the face of an otherwise very strong push to own VR/AR. I understand that the timing is due to the Quest 2's release, but still.
