What if the export company is itself in Kent? Do they have to erect a border station at the exit to their factory? If a trucker is stopped in Kent without paperwork, how do you prove that their next destination is the EU? What are the odds on how much thought has gone into this by the Tories?

weast posted:I heard Keir Starmer recently referring to himself as a socialist (which is absurd) and that got me wondering: how many of the recent Labour Party leaders have called themselves socialist? When people like Starmer identify as a socialist, they don't mean a socialist. A good illustration of this is the fight over clause IV. Blair got rid of the old clause in the Labour constitution which committed it to a socialist economic agenda (without explicitly mentioning socialism): quote:To secure for the workers by hand or by brain the full fruits of their industry and the most equitable distribution thereof that may be possible upon the basis of the common ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange, and the best obtainable system of popular administration and control of each industry or service. and replaced it with one that labelled the party as a democratic socialist organisation, but made clear that socialism was just kind of a vibe, and didn't involve a transformative vision which would threaten capital or anything: quote:The Labour Party is a democratic socialist Party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few; where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe and where we live together freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.

gotta say the 'impunity for torture and time limits for injury and accident claims by troops' bill passing the HoC has made genuinely, genuinely angry only 18 Labour MPs voting against it; Starmer sacking Nadia Whittome over opposing it (and telling Guido first?); the whole thing being literally just some culture war rubbish spat out by the government; aargh! I guess it's a bit lib to care so much about a technical yet-to-be-enacted law, but check out this briefing for some cool reading about how we should respect troops' lived experience and the particular pressures they're under when they torture some folks: https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8983/

One of the reasons Corbyn got in was that the last time the Labour right were in charge they whipped to abstain on benefit cuts. Among other reasons, this is a "gently caress you" to the left.
