https://www.theguardian.com/austral...-leste-spy-case

quote:

Government lawyers have invoked cabinet confidence in an attempt to stop Bernard Collaery and his team from viewing a briefing to the prime minister relevant to the Timor-Leste spying case.

...

Inside, an argument was heard over Collaery’s attempt to obtain five documents – all briefings to departmental secretaries and ministers – from the Australian government. Little detail was given in open court about the nature of the internal government briefings Collaery is seeking including when they were written.
One of the documents is a briefing to the prime minister ahead of a meeting of the powerful national security committee of cabinet.

...

But Collaery’s barrister, Christopher Ward SC, said the documents were clearly removed from cabinet deliberations and were needed for the proper administration of justice. “They are a very long way removed … from the deliberations of cabinet,” he said.
Some were merely background briefings for departmental secretaries ahead of meetings with other departmental secretaries, Ward argued.
The fact that similar issues were later discussed in cabinet meetings did not mean the briefings suddenly revealed cabinet deliberations.
“Nothing that is sought is a declaration that does directly reveal cabinet deliberations,” Collaery’s barrister said. “Not one of these documents are cabinet documents in the classic sense of the word.”

I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

Forgive me, as this is all apropos of nothing, and has probably all been said before and better by others in this thread. But I feel the need to say this somewhere.

1) Sky News Aus. are loving awful. They are trying SO hard to be Fox News, and whilst they have the fascist leaning, 'everything the other guy does is evil, everything our guy does is golden' partisanship down. They still manage to be loving bland and unwatchable. When Andrew Bolt sitting in front of a green screen intoning "climate change doesn't exist" dirge like is your flagship next to the short angry bearded guy, (sorry dunno his name) calling Dan Andrews a socialist dictator as your exciting programming. Your entire station is stinky poopy nonsense.

2) How loving pissweak is the Victorian Opposition. Don't get me wrong, I stand with Dan, and this interminable lockdown is working in terms of numbers etc. But any half competent opposition should be tearing strips off the man. There is the Hotel Quarantine bungle to attack him on. There is the rising sense of frustration and anger at lockdown to build upon. There is even a "look at other states, they can have a drink at the pub, why can't we!" simple arse slogan to rouse the apathetic. Yet the Vic. Libs are doing very little of this, and what they are doing they are doing badly. Andrews himself is even making himself a target by being on TV everyday.

and 3) Scomo is still a prick.

Nah, not him. There's a chubby guy with a full brown beard. A cursory search says his name is Paul Murray. I think he is a Sydney radio guy.

I think Andrews eating up all the TV time with his pressers is actually having the opposite effect. Less screen time for whatshisface the Vic Lib leader to spew bullshit.

Agree on all other points though. Bolt is possibly the least charismatic person I've ever seen, which is good because it hopefully makes his garbage opinion less persuasive.

Australians seem to delude ourselves thinking our country is less corrupt than what we think of other countries where you have to pay off the cops to not hassle you, and I guess we are in that regard, but the top end of society is just corrupt in every regard. It is so hosed.

TCW is thought to have drowned in the Canning River at Thornlie, Western Australia, while attempting to evade police. He was last seen crossing the river on foot on the Spring Road Bridge while being followed by police and it is believed he may have jumped in. His body was not found until seven days later. His family raised concerns that he may have been assaulted, but the coroner ruled out foul play.

That's pretty cooked in general but especially so for getting a TFN as minors can apply for them (I got mine in high-school as part of some program where the school helps everyone in Year 10 to apply for one).

You didn't see it because no one posts here anymore.

The most frustrating part of this if you ignore the authoritarian implications, is this continual idea that throwing technology at the problem will result in service improvements when that same money could be used for better resourcing and service delivery.

Workchoices on steroids, and there won't be anywhere near the backlash. First time round a lot of the pushback was because the economy was good and people rightly saw it as an ideological overstep. This time the government and media will just say how it's necessary for recovery and enough people will buy it.
