if you want the heavy, start with SYL - City if you want the mellow, start with Devin Townsend Project - Ki if you want a weird amalgamation of everything, start with his most recent, Devin Townsend - Empath, and work backwards imo

Start with Ocean Machine or Terria imo. SYL is cool but it’s more of its own thing, the appeal isn’t the same as his solo stuff or DTP.

Kvlt! posted:i have never listened to any Devin Townsend material where should i start? Basically, with Devin you have Strapping Yound Lad (heavy and angry) and his various other 'Devin Townsend' projects and bands (more happy and spiritual, but can be heavy in some instances). Either way, the guy's vocals can be pretty insane, with high screaming, soft murmuring and some operatic-sounding poo poo. The first I ever heard of him was Strapping Young Lad's, Alien. Absolute beast of an album, with insane drumming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hog8DTQkjBM Or, just listen to Juular. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9-waGQbz3o Also, he makes funny faces. henpod fucked around with this message at 19:09 on Oct 8, 2020 |

Devin Townsend is interesting because he went through a lot of different sounds. It's fascinating reading his biography because when he quit drugs he went on a productivity spree of several utterly different albums. Compare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL9Aohgd79I with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u81zmQrib9g, it's obviously him but completely different. And then back to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQaETtF_dzQ. You can find everything in between in his discography. He usually has a ton of "musical" in his stuff when he's not deconstructing badgers.

whilst it's not my cup of tea, I have seen SYL perform whilst I was a strappin' lil' 14 year old laddy myself nearly twenty years ago. I believe this was the infamous 'skullet' era. Devin took the piss out of the entire crowd basically the entirety of the show and we all gobbled it up. man's got some undeniable charisma as a performer, I'll grant you that. Devon Townsend was the last gig I went to before Covid hosed everything up and it was a good one to go out on, 10/10 show. In other news I'm listening to the new Venom Prison album and it's great.

Here's some new poo poo to pass the Friday Vintlechkeit, atmoblack. I think I've said this at least 3 times this year, but if you like this there's like 20 other albums by him to check out Yatra, stoner doom Venom Prison as mentioned above, dxc/dm Inferi, melo techdeath Hellripper, black speed Necrophobic on non-BC, melo blackened death. Could have sworn their album just came out but apparently that was 2 years ago
