Anybody done a roll bar in the ND? I’m wondering how difficult the hard dog m4 roll bar and maybe a racing seat will be. I’ve done suspension, sways, brake and catch can stuff myself but wondering if it’s significantly more work and will I need two people to mess around with the top? Thanks.

Posting for some second opinions and because SA is best forum.

I have an ND RF that I daily drive. In Pittsburgh. All year round. I have a set of 16 inch wheels with blizzaks for the winter before you ask. More importantly, I have gotten into HPDE with the ND and quite enjoy it. I did 4 long weekend events this year.

Currently I have a third set of wheels (hypergrams) with some hankook rs4s mounted and both karcepts sway bars mounted. I found after mounting the front bar that the car pushed quite a bit. Adding the rear bar moved the handling back to neutral.

I'm now looking at suspension setups that will be comfy enough for DD but also (mostly) eliminate the body roll on track. It also appears as if I'll have to install a roll bar, per my last track day, which eliminates the ability to drop the top.

I'm at a but of a crossroads.

I can dump another $1,800 into the ND minimum for the roll bar and suspension or put that aside for a dedicated NB track car when I can store a third car. I can probably get past losing the ability to drop the top, but I'm curious on thoughts. FYI as of this moment I don't have space or a vehicle capable of towing. I may move back to Houston soon ish so I have time to think. Also, car groups love spending other people's money so go for it!

The Xidas for the ND should give you a comfortable enough ride on the street. The bigger issue is what do you do if you put it into the tire barrier?

I buy insurance every weekend for the financial risk. I started reading this thread a few days ago and apparently I'm taking a huge risk driving at hpde events without a roll bar in an ND? I had no idea. Neither Chin nor Gridlife said anything about needing one, but my most recent event with Trackdaze mentioned I may be required to install one...

It’s your car but I wouldn’t sacrifice the top down especially in something as unique as the RF. Also you might not want to daily a race car, you’ll be swapping pads and wheels all the time. And with the maybe move and having an option to get a dedicated car later on, it sounds like there’s a lot negatives at least right now. However on the other hand gently caress yeah performance cars own daily drive full stiff, squeal brakes and be loud as hell. So idk just be aware of trade offs?

I’m one to talk too as I’m slowly turning my ND into a race car but it’s not my daily.

FWIW Flyian Miata fox coilovers are very street and track friendly, comfy and feel good fast.

Thanks y'all. I'm looking at the FM Fox setup, and the Ohlins setup from GWR as suspension options that are streetable, but yeah I have some time to stew for a several months as the season just ended here. All of the other miata bros I drive with have dedicated track cars (NA, NB, NC), but also no space limitations. Lol they told me the best option is to get a set of basic bilsteins, revalve them and ebay coilover sleeves with stiff rear end springs - "eh not too bad to daily? You've got stock seats so you should be fine!"

Could someone post a picture of their NB Miata of the area between the trunk opening and the quarter panel? Is it basically flat as the drip rail heads back to the tail lights or is there some kind of curve to it?

So, on my new-to-me 2001, I've managed to repair both soft top latches and three of four hard top latches. One of the screws on the fourth latch hates me unconditionally. First it stripped, and then when I took an extractor to it, the screw broke right at the end of the threaded section of the top. Anyone have thoughts on where I could take it where someone smarter than me could fix it up? I'm not sure if this is a mechanic job or some other sort of specialist problem.

Alright, let's do this
Maybe find someone that can weld a bolt onto it, or get a thin step drill bit and drill out the stuck bit? These feel like nuclear solutions that are just as likely to make things worse, so hopefully someone can give you something more useful.

Kinda digging the polished one but I'm worried it will look like poo poo once it gets some brake dust on it.

The polished one is nearly a pound lighter too.

It's because gloss black/polished two tone are the same colors you see on the cheapest aftermarket wheels around. They never look good because the targeted audience has no idea what fitment is.

A pound lighter would be nice but I’d still go with grey.

Ended up going with the grey. Thanks for the input.

What tires do you guys recommend? I mostly just drive in the canyons and plan on doing some beginner level track days next year. I was thinking of trying the Conti ECS but I'm not sure if they're worth using over the PS4S. I've also used RE71R on my old cars strictly for autox but I imagine that is overkill for street driving.

The car isn't a daily driver.

I used the PSS and PS4 on my daily. Great all around tire. My miata currently runs a BF Goodrich Rival S and that's also very fun. Both tires aren't aggressively loud, have decent wear, good wet weather performance, and are comfortable. Anecdotally I've heard the Rival S is a decent in between to the RE71 and PS4 trackwise which I tend to agree with since I run all 3 tires. They keep their composure a lot better as they heat up unlike the RE71-R which turns greasy like a qualifying tire.

I am 5k miles into a ND and am starting to slightly regret the recaro seats for being too narrow for my fat thighs. Starts becoming a slight nag on drives > 1 hour. I am thinking about how nice the touring model's leather seats could be... I wonder how bad it is to swap these seats and/or find someone who wants to trade for their new(ish) touring seats

Partial Octopus
Feb 4, 2006

It shouldn't be that hard. Lots of people want the Recaros but don't want to pay the insane price to buy them from a dealer. I think the average going price on forums for them is around $2k each. I'm sure if you post on miata.net you could find someone who would take them off your hands.

Nice. Yeah I called the dealer to find the leather seat price for fun today and it was 3800 per seat which is... cool

Holy poo poo, find a burned to the metal seat and take it to an automotive upholstery. They'll fit it with leather, heating, cooling, and memory foam specific to your rear end for less.

Is the stock cooling in the ND2 sufficient for track days or should I invest in an oil cooler if I plan on doing them frequently?

Th ND2 has added some sort of extra oil cooling vs the ND1 right? I’ve read the bolt on oil coolers won’t fit the 2019+ . Do a track day and see if it starts pulling timing maybe ? Sorry for a poo poo answer.

Partial Octopus

There's some heat exchanger that works between the oil and the coolant but I'm not sure how effective it is at actually cooling anything. From what I gathered it was mostly to have the oil get up to temp more quickly.

Is there much point in adding a shock tower brace to a mostly stock NB with great coilovers and tires?

I did the improve door bushings and the car handles and rides really well right now so I'm wondering if it's worth the extra weight.

I wouldn't bother if you're not tracking the car. Also, the "weight" of adding a strut bar isn't much of a factor at all.

Oh man the weather was excellent yesterday so I went for a drive (not like you can do anything else) and it was a loving nightmare. All the back roads were full of cyclists, harley dads and weekend drivers who couldn't even maintain legal speeds. No way to pass anyone either because there's always a cyclist struggling the other way too.

The curse of the rear right tire:

- sidewall punctured by a loving rake on the freeway in apr, 2k miles
- not covered under mazdas warranty, buy a new one at costco, road hazard warranty yay
- sidewall punctured by a loving nail, 5k miles
- to costco I go for a fix
- costco guy: the tire you bought is in the front
- realize the dealership had rotated my tires
- buy another costco tire

either my luck is poo poo, or these stock tires loving suck, I just want them to grow old together so I can replace all 4 with something reasonable

but I also have never owned "performance" tires before, maybe they are supposed to be this fragile

also, gently caress CA south bay roads and their unending debris

The S001s are pretty soft. The carcass is fairly squishy, the tread doesn't move though, the sidewalls are also soft. I drove on RE-71Rs that had 9psi in them because I picked up a nail somewhere, the car felt off, but you couldn't easily tell from a visual because the sidewalls are super stiff.

Sounds like road maintenance and debris issues. (there's too much construction everywhere)

All of the worst poo poo happens in the first year of owning a new car. This is the rule.

I curbed my wheels twice, dented my bumper, scratched my fender, cracked my windshield, and cracked the front splitter on my ND in the first year. Then absolutely no drama for the next 3 years.
