I wish I was friends with Eddie Vedder. A lot of fans have interwoven their likes into their personality so someone saying "I don't like a thing" is seen as a personal attack on that person.

I don't lose my poo poo when I see an article saying Star Trek V is the worst Trek film, even though I enjoy the hell out of it, and it's been 30 years. my experience is that, for a long time leading up to the Snyder Cut stuff (and somewhat still nowadays, but not quite as bad), people who don't like Snyder were incredibly loving aggro towards people who do. like, they didn't want to just call the movies bad and be done with it, there was a lot of insane circlejerking about how if you like the movies that clearly means you're a secret Ayn Rand-loving Nazi and poo poo like that. like, for a comparison, i also stan Alita: Battle Angel pretty hard (and, at the end of the day, for similar reasons: because it was a non-Disney blockbuster that actually tried to do something new instead of being extruded movie product). but... I don't end up getting into constant slapfights about Alita, because the people who don't like that movie are perfectly fine just going "meh, wasn't my bag," moving on, and not letting it live rent-free in their head. I was actually worried it might be a similar situation for a while because chuds tried to position it as the right-wing alternative to Captain Marvel, but then they realized it was not actually a right-wing movie at all and shut up about it, so that never happened, thank God, and people who don't like that movie are capable of being chill and civil about it. meanwhile, with Snyder, there's very, very few people i encounter who just... kinda don't like his DC stuff, and a lot who think he's some kind of actively horrible human that only other horrible humans would like, and that me liking him means I'm a Nazi incel who personally elected Trump.

Yeah it's unfair to those that don't fall into it, but that Venn diagram had a ton of overlap. I do have to laugh that one defense of his films that I saw (and it might have even been in CD, though I can't be sure) was "If that [shot/decision] was what the director intended, then it can't be criticized." I mean, that's some level thinking there. By that logic, then no movie could be criticized unless the director came out and said "I made a mistake." But, moving on https://twitter.com/LlcTerrific/status/1314057942170136576?s=20 I can't decipher what this is trying to say? Davros1 fucked around with this message at 19:36 on Oct 9, 2020 |

the other problem here is... i haven't actually personally seen chud Snyder fans. like, this isn't me trying to be an rear end in a top hat, and i should probably also note i don't go on chud safari anywhere near as often as i used to, so i might be missing some wild poo poo in Snyder threads on 4chan or in the chud parts of Twitter or etc. but, in the spaces where i engage with this stuff, the vast majority of the Snyder fans I encounter are left-wing and pretty decent people. meanwhile, when i straight up ask for evidence of alt-right rear end in a top hat Snyder fans, I usually get told to eat poo poo and treated like that's proof of me being a secret Nazi, instead of someone just, like, pulling up some tweets from dickheads, or pointing me to a particularly well-known bad person in the fandom, or anything like that. because it's supposedly just a self-evident thing that i'd be able to see if i wasn't a Snyder fan. which sucks, because i would actually genuinely appreciate knowing what people are talking about in this instance, instead of it appearing that they live in bizarro world.

WeedlordGoku69 posted:the other problem here is... i haven't actually personally seen chud Snyder fans. Read comment sections and then hate humanity' To be more specific: the reason why you may get a poor response to asking for proof is because providing proof never actually changes anything. This exact conversation has had before and every time it happens it ends with "Well, that is just 1/2/3/4 people and doesn't represent any significant group." It's tiresome to try to prove this stuff on the internet because in every single situation the same response happens which is "Unless you can show me 9473 examples I can only assume these are outliers and all of your experiences are invalid." (It also goes the opposite direction where people who want to believe all Snyder fans are Nazis will point to any counterexamples as being outliers and probably dig up a tweet of someone saying something nasty on Twitter because they were in a bad mood one day.) The honest truth is that any significantly large group of fandom is going to have a whole lot of crazy and lovely people in it. If you don't encounter those people it is because you are (very rightly) avoiding places where you have to interact with them. Social media makes that stuff a lot harder. If you hold any viewpoint that goes against a very strong group of fans then you better believe you are going to hear a lot about it. I got got threatened with murder because I was positive about a video game people didn't like. Snyder fans can be really nice and cool people who respect Snyder's creative output. They can also be the guy who things 300 is unironic and BvS is good because Batman totally shoots a bunch of dudes unlike that pussy Superman. People who dislike Snyder can have justifiable and understandable reasons for doing so. They can also be the guy who is *extremely* angry that Superman didn't smile enough. If you are going to engage in conversation online in anywhere as remotely public as Twitter/Facebook then you are going to get a lot of extremely loving awful responses unless you are so obscure nobody reads your tweets but your friends or whatever. And sometimes even then. ImpAtom fucked around with this message at 21:32 on Oct 9, 2020 |

That's really not a summation anyone can reasonably prove or disprove, and I usually only see it trotted out to justify why it's totally cool to label LGBT and POC people as alt-right chuds for liking a movie. I could say "There's a lot of overlap between MCU fans and the sort of person who thinks its funny to encourage people to commit suicide/mock Snyder's daughter's suicide" and it would be about as valuable to the conversation.

Zach Snyder is a director who has some amazing cinematography and structure in his films and clearly has a great grasp of film history.. He's also the director who makes rape jokes, and makes claims people who don't support him are just too childish to understand adult films. Both of those elements are part of him and they color people's readings of his films depending on how they take things. People tend to either give him all the benefit of the doubt or no benefit of the doubt and that leads to extreme responses. Like Sucker Punch is a great example. Nobody who actually saw Sucker Punch is unaware that it is clearly supposed to have a message about how women are treated, but it gets turned into "Zach Snyder's Pornfest" in conversations all the time. On the other hand people who think it failed at that goal or slipped more into titilation than commentary often get told they're just too dumb to get the real message. This is the conversation that happens around every Zach Snyder film because it always has to be all or nothing. It's true of 300, it's true of MoS, it's true of BvS, it's true of Watchmen. I think the only film of his it isn't true about is Dawn of the Dead. That attitude is a lot of what colors strong responses on both sides, especially because there are assholes on both sides who absolutely do poison the well and tend to be a lot louder than the non-assholes because that is how assholes work. (And especially since the nature of modern internet means that every extreme rear end in a top hat probably gets shared in a discord or something as proof the other side is loving nuts, so most people's interactions are in a curated view of things.) There are a lot of people who's opinions on BvS haters varied from "they just want a pussy Superman" to "They're just *heh* not adult enough to understand the true complexity of this movie about Batman being mad at Superman" and vice-versa with people who think anyone who likes Zach Snyder can only be a toxic shithead. And it's kind of reached the point now where conversation about Zach Snyder can't happen because neither side is actually willing to back down even an inch or even admit they share the stage with some lovely people. Despite the fact that this is the internet and there is no such thing as a fandom that doesn't have a loud group of total shitlords.

I just don't find the whole "Fans of X thing are largely chuds" worth really pursuing. It's a dead end discussion because I could just say "My experience has been largely positive" and at that point it's just your word against mine with no real way for anyone to really prove anything. That argument about linking chud Snyder fans as proof not being enough cuts both ways. If I were to link a bunch of leftist Snyder fans, it would just be written off as outliers not representative of the fandom. It's a reductionist attitude that just doesn't leave any room for nuance. I think it's just as likely that Snyder movies are just going to be popular with people of all kinds of political beliefs, like any movie, comic, game, tv show, etc.

I've posted this in other threads before but I don't understand the need the broader internet has to link media preferences to morality. I don't like Snyder's movies and there's definitely a bunch of loud assholes on both sides of the argument, but just liking this thing or not doesn't mean you're a Nazi or too stupid to have understood it or whatever. Just let people like what they like.

I'm so jealous of that Agnes Varda box set. I saw her speak in 2013 and it was life-changing but I've never managed to scrape up the pennies for that set during one of the yearly sales. Anyway, bedside tables aren't the dark side of the comics industry (hopefully) but I do like this kind of stuff and seeing a glimpse of peoples' lives, so here's my beside situation. I have a little narrow three four-tier shelf set-up so that I can put my glass of water and stuff on the second tier, extra night stuff on the bottom shelf, and stuff I wind up reading in bed on the top two shelves, although that's gone onto disarray. One of the shelves is also the most concentrated nerd-poo poo area in our entire home, so. Right now the stuff to-hand is mostly catalogues of paintings because they help me when I'm stressed and things adjacent to essays I'm writing.
