I've been hearing a lot about Hegar that makes me not like her, but I can imagine that if she wins the race, in addition to driving the state party insane, she'll be weird and difficult in congress in a way that Texans would be kinda proud of even if her goals aren't great. Because I've heard all those classic stories about Texans being proud of being independent regardless of how true they are. Spacebump posted:Man, I didn't know Big Tex was a Republican. That's why his pants caught on fire.

i say swears online posted:https://www.statesman.com/article/20121104/NEWS/311049793 I'm pretty sure I remember the Statesman stopped doing endorsements for some elections because it was hard, or required research or something. I'm not sure exactly for which election(s) that happened. Historically, the Statesman has often done terrible endorsements anyway (Bush in 2000 and 2004, for two examples.)

Being held accountable to the will of the public at large is Orwellian because if the ruling class doesn't have the freedom to do literally whatever they want with the power invested in them, it's a dystopia. I think that's basically it.

They pay well, have great health benefits, comes with defined benefit pensions, and civil service protections. It is a great gig for stability, you just have to learn to exist within the local bureaucracy

yeah i'd love a bureaucracy job frankly, just typing away in excel in a cubicle all day. it's just that my resume gets worse the more time goes on, and i don't get any callbacks. i spent all 2017 applying for city of austin, the teacher retirement system, and UT, but just zero results. i know it's poison to do so but it's hard not to just give up

(The pension eligibility/benefits for newer employees have been watered down, though.) Salary depends a lot on the position. The legislature has not been generous in terms of keeping salaries in line with the cost of living, or competitive with the private sector.
