I've been hearing a lot about Hegar that makes me not like her, but I can imagine that if she wins the race, in addition to driving the state party insane, she'll be weird and difficult in congress in a way that Texans would be kinda proud of even if her goals aren't great.

Because I've heard all those classic stories about Texans being proud of being independent regardless of how true they are.

I'm pretty sure I remember the Statesman stopped doing endorsements for some elections because it was hard, or required research or something. I'm not sure exactly for which election(s) that happened.

Historically, the Statesman has often done terrible endorsements anyway (Bush in 2000 and 2004, for two examples.)

They're endorsing this guy? https://www.statesman.com/news/20180727/austins-top-single-family-water-user-in-2017-a-us-congressman

quote:

However, the McCauls did use more than 1.4 million gallons of water last year. That’s known because the resident listed second on the city’s usage list, Betsy Abell, president of the Buena Vista Foundation, used 1,400,900 gallons at her home near Pease Park.

A spokeswoman for McCaul’s congressional office said the McCauls have had chronic troubles with their water pipes. When asked how long the McCauls had been dealing with this problem, the spokeswoman did not respond with an answer.

:thunk:

I hate being in his gerrymandered district.

theyre still saying its about "election security" for the same reasons project veritas is still making videos. theres noone in the media willing to stand up to them other than stuff like propublica. the regular media is happy just sitting there and letting them offer an "alternate viewpoint" or whatever without analysis cause that would imply bias

Man - have you thought of trying for a non-political municipal job with the City or County? They pay well, have great health benefits, comes with defined benefit pensions, and civil service protections. It is a great gig for stability, you just have to learn to exist within the local bureaucracy

There are also state agency jobs, which have fairly good insurance and a pension system. (The pension eligibility/benefits for newer employees have been watered down, though.) Salary depends a lot on the position. The legislature has not been generous in terms of keeping salaries in line with the cost of living, or competitive with the private sector.
