The Oregon Museum of Science has currently borrowed artifacts to create an exhibit on Ghengis Khan and the Mongol Empire. I enjoyed it. I also learned that Arghun Khan wrote to King Philip of France in 1289 and proposed that they conquer Jerusalem together. That's not an alternate history I had ever imagined.

Did the CCP chuck a fit about this exhibit like they did re: the one in France? Or did this museum agree to the CCP's demands so they could exhibit all the cool poo poo?

I presume that's why they used a scribble for an "I' in Genghis Kahn's name.

BrigadierSensible posted:Did the CCP chuck a fit about this exhibit like they did re: the one in France? I think the difference is that the French exhibit relied on artifacts from Inner Mongolia so China was able to pressure them with pre-conditions. The one in Oregon bypassed China entirely and sourced their items from Russia and the nation of Mongolia so the CCP had no say in the matter.

I believe there were also embassies going the other way to attempt to negotiate an anti-Muslim/Mamluk alliance to launch a joint crusade/Mongol attack, but that most of this came to nothign for logistical reasons or because the embassies didn't make it to their destination. China controls a significant portion of what used to be Mongolia and other territory formerly populated by related Mongolian, Tungusic and Turkic peoples, as a result of centuries of moving frontiers, imperial conquest, colonization and at times outright genocide, due to its hostile conditions, native resistance and poverty what is now Mongolia never really fell under direct Chinese control, partly because the rewards likely fell far short of the costs (unlike the areas populated by the Uyghurs and others up towards the Tarim Basin and Central Asia, which sit along and control vital trade routes, including, in pre-modern times, China's premier source of warhorses). It did come up, partly out of not knowing but there were a lot of Nestorian Christians among the Mongols. Also the Roman Empire allied themselves with the Mongols to avoid getting owned. This involved marriages, so at one point the same (extended) royal family sat on both the Chinese and Roman imperial thrones.

Makes a lot of sense. Since we know that the origin of all language is of course Korean, this must have been how the gift of speech spread so far west. Crazy to think we'd all still be grunting like cavemen if it weren't for the famous Chinese general Genghis Khan's journey west.

JFC it's been an ordeal to get my mother in law back to China. She's been here since Dec 26th, and if it doesn't happen today, it's likely going to be 2021 before she makes it home. Air Canada always has been, and always will be a loving disgrace, but they're the only disgrace in town for us now. Fingers crossed.
