It's the downside of being earnest and sincere.

The expectation is people generally don't want to be disliked. When you get broken people like pissflaps it goes to poo poo because he was some kind of negative-attention demon. An unstoppable force that wanted people to figuratively and literally throw him down a piss well.

Then it turned out he was a genuine transphobe and it was less funny.
