Trump has turned out his vote to a ridiculous degree that I'm not sure any other Republican candidate could have done. Approval numbers don't necessarily have likely voter filters like election polling does. If you don't have those filters in place then you can do a sample of the country and get a pretty accurate approval number. The real tricky part is getting the correct filters to exclude people from a sample when you're trying to get likely voters.
