amd said yesterday that another big shipment should be going out in a couple of weeks. we'll see. i'm still loving the 3600 and honestly am less hot on getting the 5900x until some time next year when things calm down a god damned bit.

Yeah, I've been needing to update my i7 2600k for a good while now, but was holding out until the end of the year with the Zen 3s dropping. I can wait longer but I was all excited at the start of the year thinking of have it built for Xmas.

i'd be totally fine with a queue system but just staring at <Backordered> in the status is no help. i'd even prepay for it if it guaranteed me a spot in line. but noooo

i'm glad i got a 3900 just before this because lol. i'll take the slight performance hit in exchange for actually having a processor before 2021 i've completely given up on getting a new graphics card; maybe i'll get a notification from evga before christmas, but i doubt it

my biggest fear, that I posted in another thread, is that my current system is being held together by farts and hope and may go out at any time considering it previously cooked something and then decided to saunter on like nothing happened.

yeah my current desktop has one hard drive plugged in that no longer mounts, another spewing smart errors, a case fan that shredded itself, and a power supply making distressing noises. this build was, in part, out of need. the gazillion cores is just greed

So what's the preferred cooling solution for a CPU these days? I was going to get a huge-rear end heat sync like this https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07YLKPWL5?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1 but apparently liquid CPU coolers are all the rage now https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07JWB5BSN?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1? I'm old and dumb and it sucks.

comedy option: refrigerant cooler (like water cooling but you actually use a compressor and phase transitions instead of just passive heat transfer) run it on r290 for the king of the hill jokes

just get a big block of aluminum and call it a day. video card is going to be making way more noise than the cpu fan anyway

Jabor posted:comedy option: refrigerant cooler (like water cooling but you actually use a compressor and phase transitions instead of just passive heat transfer) cryocoolers are becoming a thing. they work so well that they come with a silicone shield that sits over the socket to keep condensation from forming and dripping into your CPU socket

also i’m jealous of jonny and the rest of you zenhavers. since i’m on a haswell at the moment, but it does everything i do instantly still despite being 6 years old because it’s a 4GHz xeon with enough ram and ssds to hold out til ddr5. just some major upgrade blueballs because im from an era where 18 months was the standard upgrade cycle. not like i really miss that, ofc.

I spent about $8 shipped for a 2.6 ghz upgrade.
