Let's do some cultural exchange: Carbide shooting! Practised in the rural Netherlands, it's a tradition where containers are turned into festive artillery piece by filling them up with calcium carbide and igniting that. Every turn of the year, the Dutch country side turns into a blend of Mad Max, The Purge, and Fallout. Most often people are using old milk jugs for that purpose: Or gas bottles: Some people use old construction equipment: There are terrifyfing carbide Katyushas: The biggest class of carbide artillery are fertilizer tanks: The Dutch take their agrarian artillery very seriously: Here's a video compilation featuring a lot of milk jugs and a few of the big fertilizer tank or even more specialized guns. Note how teenagers are also using them to shoot at each other right on the streets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abql2ExwG54 Recently, the Dutch governement has placed severe restrictions on fireworks in urban centres. The reason for this is that there are far too many idiots who lose their limbs, hearing, life, or (un-)intentionally hurt others when igniting (often illegaly imported) fireworks, plus all the noise pollution that starts in November and goes on thorughout January. Luckily, carbid shooting is a recognized cutural heritage so we'll keep seeing blowing themselves to pieces

anonumos posted:"gently caress your trailer. And gently caress your road surface, too." To be fair, the road didn't look that bad after it had the trailer dragged over it. I've definitely seen worse from a truck going over at speed and digging into the road as it slid. And if you didn't want your trailer to be completely hogfucked, maybe don't drive somewhere the winds are going to tip it over.

Note how teenagers are also using them to shoot at each other right on the streets. As a Finnish Defence Force artillery man I can throw a few comments about this. The most acute danger about firing footballs out of milk canisters is damaging your eardrums or lighting people or property on fire. The larger pieces shown in the video though, hoo boy. The way some of those things fire, they sound and move much like the actual 122mm howitzer I was trained to operate, when firing a blank shell. The acute danger isn't damaged hearing, that's a guarantee. You'll need both earplugs and ear covering hear protectors to be safe when close to the gun. The actual danger is the recoil. If there's something resembling a projectile in the pipe, then you're also looking at a tremendous amount of recoil. One of the principal duties of the commander of an artillery squad is to make sure there's nobody directly behind the cannon before issuing the fire command. When a howitzer throws a ~30kg grenade 30km away, newton says something's going to move back. The artillery pieces we used were pinned down with giant steel nails, the ones seen on the video seem to be pinned down with wheels and hope. If there's something stuffed down the pipe of one of these things tight enough, it will launch back with a vengeance.

The schools were closed, and the kids ran around like hooligans all the time. When the Nazis retreated, he and his friends found some abandoned munitions. Belts of machine gun ammo, mortars, grenades, flares, etc. He and his dumb little buddies started a big bonfire in the woods, threw a big box of it in the fire, and hid behind the trees while they all cooked off. He's amazed that none of them got hurt doing it, hearing shrapnel whistle around them through the trees.
