They might have to adjust the rules soon just to avoid the perception of widespread obvious rule breaking with no consequences. The masks don't bother me so I'm happy to keep wearing them but it's going to be hard to convince people of the need to wear them in outside parks, sports fields, trails etc when there is very little virus getting around I don't really understand the utility of masks in a park or whatever when you can sit in a busy restaurant precinct without a mask for hours.

As a Brisbane resident who visits Sydney once a year for a holiday I always marvel at how easy and cheap it is to get around effectively by public transport in Sydney.

Yeah I'm as much of a COVID police state apologist as you'll find but frankly, at this point, there's no need for people to be wearing masks outside and the continued mandate post-lockdown is only going to compromise public perception of masks in situations where they're actually useful. Make them mandatory in workplaces, retail stores, on public transport, and for hospo staff if not customers. But it's self-evidently silly for them to be required when walking alone down the street but not when jogging down the same street, or sitting inside a small cafe for an hour.

It's the one thing I really miss living in Brisbane. PT here is just so terrible and useless (although the airconditioned buses are very nice to sit in for an hour).

It's the kind of arbitrary distinction that can erode confidence in the whole health response, I reckon they'll have to change it. There have been a few articles by non crazies saying something like this

And Sydney's transit is garbage compared to somewhere like Singapore, Brisbane just really sucks unless you are only going somewhere on the main lines.

The wild thing about SEQ public transport is the parts of it that are good and efficient and cheap mostly run through the areas with the highest median income/property prices and the rest of it is completely hosed. You can say that good access drives value up but that doesn't explain poo poo like the g-link which got put in completely as a whole system long after the areas it runs through were established and super charged with yuppie energy

Yeah it does seem pretty strange when at work we have to wear masks when working outside all day but then go into the crib rooms for lunch and taken them off to eat while sitting inside in close proximity to each other. I guess on the flip side blanket requirements are far easier to comprehend than nuanced specific rules for certain circumstances. Messaging gets too complicated otherwise.

Wearing masks should be normalised and not seen as a freak one-time event.

In Brisbane I live 13 km from the city and driving is 15-20 minutes and PT is 45 minutes at least (with far less services). Distance is immaterial, it's whether there's any will to put it on at all. Yeah I live ~7km from my work but it takes me about an hour to get there by public transport on weekday mornings, entirely because I have to go into Perth first, which is in the wrong direction, then change train lines. Meanwhile, cycling there takes a more civilised 20-25 minutes. Sometimes there's even Carnaby's or red-tailed black cockatoos for you to admire on the way in.

My mum's a nurse and they separated out eating areas with temporary covered outside areas available to eat your meal by yourself and not be without a mask within meters of others. Not all staff avail themselves of it unfortunately. Our worksite we staggered lunches and setup the tables so that you would be several meters between personnel while eating. A lot of the guys want to chat with their mates so takes some enforcing to make sure they don't drag table/chairs together etc.

Exactly the problem in Brisbane. When I first moved up here I was working in Beenleigh and the drive from my place was about 35 minutes. One day I tried to catch public transport and it took 1.75 hours each way, with 2 transfers. Such a waste of time.

I know someone that lives near Essendon airport and looks up the planes on app as they're going past to see where they're going and stuff, apparently it's a thing people do. He has some kind of radio setup to listen to their communications as well.

I see Victoria is planning to do what we discussed some thread ago about expanding public housing. Which is nice and hopefully they are dusting off some old detailed plans and not just rushing it and creating the equivalent of UK projects housing.
