I'm afraid Mr. Pratchett is mostly wrong on this one. While there is a lot of Chinese cuisine that emerged out of desperation and starvation, that's mostly boring vegetable-based poo poo that modern folks with means don't bother with. Pre-revolution Chinese nobles were never gatekeeping shark meat while throwing the fins to the commoners. Chinese peons were never climbing up cliffsides for bird nests to avoid starvation in lieu of superior nourishment. These things were always considered delicacies for the rich, and it was always because of TCM-based magical thinking.

And for what it's worth, this crap doesn't even taste good. It's magical thinking from top to bottom.

In some instances, it doesn't taste AT ALL. Shark fin soup gets all the flavor from the broth and crab meat. Same with bird spit nest.

Is there any TCM that is "Good for Woman"? Not even bringing back female arousal/sexuality/energy etc. like the "good for men" stuff. But TCM that women are encouraged to eat to be healthier? What about pregnant women? Apart from the weird thing where some poor women die of heatstroke because they shouldn't open a window in 35 degree heat, is there stuff pregnant women should be doing/eating that is good for healthy?

6 weeks. At least was the instructions from my mother in law. Only eat chicken broth as well. I got scolded by both parents for buying a watermelon after our son was born.

It's this. Given how draconian their measures (now) are with suspected cases I can believe COVID is basically under control within China. The story there has now shifted to near-daily reports of coronavirus being detected on the exterior packaging of cold/frozen food shipments arriving from overseas. And with the exception of the (still unexplained) outbreak at an Acme Totally Not Uighur Forced Labor Industries factory in Xinjiang, almost all of the recent mini-clusters of COVID cases they've reported have been connected to warehouse workers that handled imported cold-chain products.

The science is still out, but based on what's known about the virus's ability to survive on cold surfaces it's entirely possible they're telling the truth about all this. What's dangerous is that now the narrative is becoming, "well, maybe the original outbreak in Wuhan caused by contaminated imports too and not our own disastrous incompetence. I mean, who's to say, really? But it definitely could have been the fault of those dirty foreigns" :iiam:

It could be true, but at the same time contact tracing studies are all pretty much saying getting it from surfaces is hard even before factoring in storage/shipment times which would make it extremely unlikely regardless of the surface being frozen or not. Anyways if it were true you'd expect similar outbreaks in places like Taiwan, Vietnam, Australia, Iceland, NZ, etc. who are also importing plenty of foreign frozen food.

It may be that China, with 1 billion+ people, is importing at a scale vastly greater than all of those countries combined, and so by odds is just more likely to have had an outbreak so far. I mean, even considering that, there's still been only a handful of actual COVID cases they've blamed on cold storage - most of it has been samples taken from exterior packaging allegedly testing positive.

It's extremely unlikely that coronavirus is surviving on the outside of a sea freight shipment of frozen chicken tenders that takes 2 months to get there from the US. But something like fresh meat/seafood, that might only go a few days from packaging to importation, it seems at least in the realm of possibility.

It could all be bullshit. But it also seems like a bit of a self-own to make something like that up, because it suggests that China's doing kind of a poo poo job at safely handling frozen imports if workers keep getting sick.

It's not a self own when the line is that the CCP is doing an amazing, unparalleled job and completely defeated COVID. When the CCP has to continue to periodically lock down areas of the country and admit that it was due to COVID outbreaks it's a convenient narrative to say that both containment was perfect and that foreigners and foreign imports were directly responsible - which are both politically useful scapegoats.

And yeah, it could technically be possible, just very unlikely. It's not supported by evidence elsewhere or what is known about the virus at this point - whereas surface contact was still being touted as a big danger worldwide (and air transmission was being downplayed) back when China first blamed fish imports. At the time the claim was made, if you were inventing a story based on what was in the news about COVID, it would have looked like a credible thing to blame.

All the crotch abuse kung fu relies on the same trick. Under the pants is a taunt fabric brace that wraps around the thighs and across the groin. When you spread your legs the strap is pulled tight, leaving space between your junk and the beam/someone's foot, and your legs take all the force.

99% of Kung Fu's amazing feats are no more than street magic tricks.

The remaining 1% are legit feats that take years to master eg. Thumb handstands and standing on a wine bottle with only one toe. . . which are not really useful in a fight.
