a storm is coming...

That's literally the only thing I remember Regal doing EVER. Does he actually do anything else in the entire game? As much as I appreciate his kick-based fighting style I have absolutely no idea why he's a character.

he exists to tie his arc together with presea's.

presea's arc ends when they bump into a guy who looks like don corneo in a sewer and murder him

Regal was the only character in my Symphonia playthrough who had a 0% rating on that "how many times they've been in battle" thing it tracked. I think Presea had 1% cause she was forced in for a bit or something.

Worst thing I remember from DotNW was there was a cutscene before a rather difficult boss fight that was so long, I made a sandwich while waiting for it to end for the third time as I kept dying on the boss. It was the dude who disguised himself as Lloyd and was doing bad things in his name and had that annoying half-elf girl as a sidekick. Said half-elf girl you were supposed to feel sorry for at the end of the game when she died or something.

Those are the only two Tales games I've beaten, for some reason. I started Phantasia GBA and Abyss twice (PS2 and 3DS) but never made meaningful progress. And I have uh...Legendia, Vesperia, Graces f, both Xillias, and Zestiria on my shelf. That last one I think I'll try to get rid of...

You cheated not only the game, but yourself.
But most of all, you cheated BABA

Tales of Symphonia: 4.5 hours into it and I adore this game. Everything is extremely cute OR extremely worrying (human camps? what the gently caress?) and I enjoy Lloyd, Colette and Genis as characters a whole bunch. It's also been oddly nice playing an oldschool jrpg where there are so many weird mechanics, some QoL bits, and then you run into weird missable stuff like the skits at inns and such.

Assuming I don't wander off mid-game and do something else, I'm hoping to finish the main plot of Symphonia and then play Vesperia -> Zestiria (enough to experience it, I hear it's total garbage) -> Berseria. This is an extremely long term plan given how long these games are, and how short my attention span is.

I feel like this thread was going to be polite enough to at least not respond to someone being excited with another round of (rightful) Symphonia dunking, but now that you've made it a thing, the beginning of Symphonia, and indeed each individual bit of Symphonia, is fine, even occasionally good. The problem is that the game can't actually build up or follow through on anything. (Well, that and every interesting idea the game has is swiped from Phantasia or Eternia and made worse, but that's a whole other thing.)

Zestiria is another one that has a very promising first act and then takes a sharp right into crazytown and is never coherent again.

I admit a personal problem I had with Symphonia is I already played "A chosen girl sets out on a pilgrimage to gain ultimate power that actually leads to her dying in part of a neverending cycle and the protagonist has to go from escorting her to trying to break the cycle" in Final Fantasy X two years earlier.

the first ten hours of symphonia are decent if kinda weakened by lloyd just not being a very great protag yeah. but idk symphonia always seems to do well for people who haven't played any other tales games before so i'm sure they'll still enjoy it as it goes on

it's definitely not a game that's impossible to enjoy or anything it's just if i was ever gonna give a first rec i'd go for like. berseria or eternia first. eternia partially because it's really interesting that it's one of the first games one of the lead writers on nier wrote and you can kinda see it. i might also go for abyss but i think the gameplay in that one's aged pretty roughly despite how good its script is, it's better to play than symphonia and vesperia but still not really great for its runtime compared to eternia

I still like Symphonia, even if it's admittedly a bit of a soft spot from it being one of my first RPGs, so I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it!

For the next games, I'd really recommend doing Berseria (and zestiria if you really want) before vesperia.

Vesperia is just.. well.. kind of a slog to play and the plot doesn't do it many favors. Treat yourself to a really good game first and then if you still want more go back to it imo

Seems like everyone's in combat at once, btw, so it doesn't seem like it'll reuse the partners idea from the first game, gameplay or plot-wise. But it says 'team HP' and there's still a sync gauge, so I'm guessing there's still some kinda cooperative element. Maybe swapping with the d-pad?

I don't give a poo poo about the plot (I mean I guess I do a little but not as the main draw), give me the good mechanics: reducing level/hp for increased drops, no random encounters, stacking encounters for drops, levelling up pins, a shitload of pins to level up, doing fashion and stuffing food for stats

I'll also second it's good to see someone enjoying ToS. I think it's a fine game, and especially if you haven't played a ton of other Tales games the combat is pretty engaging all the way through. I also think, story gripes aside, Tales has pretty good pacing and difficulty curve for an RPG overall. Maybe I just got lucky but in both playthroughs I don't really remember hitting any bosses that were difficulty spikes and most of the dungeons are fairly simple/not too mazelike.
