So I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it.

I went on a deep dive a while back of all the webcomics I used to read. Finding out that Megatokyo is still updating (and I use the term 'updating' loosely) kind of made me sad.

(They also got a bunch of Kickstarter money for a visual novel that never came out, which doesn't surprise me at all.)

Did ol fred ever improve his mediocre pseudo-manga style or is he still doing that for Megatokyo?

It's still the same and it still looks like it did fifteen or so years ago.

Gabe from Penny-Arcade actually enjoys making art and pushing his boundaries every now and then. Piro just kinda got stuck in this very rough approximation of manga and never improved.

Basic composition, anatomy, stylization? Nah. About the only change is he found out how to deactivate the sketch layer he used to rough out the panels.

Honestly, 20 years of doing something and you'd figure some change. Right? Like his art should look like my avatar? It's the same sketch look from 2001.

Still obsessed with Pepsi, I see. I used to read that comic in highschool and that's basically the only thing I remember about it, because such a weird and trivial thing to be so vocal about.

He's like a lot of webcomic artists, they all need to take some art classes badly. Like at least 2-d design, life drawing, and layout editing for starters.

It's so innately tied into Largo's character though, even with how absolutely aged it is. At this point I don't think he could remove it.

(I'm pretty sure that even after twenty years, they've still only spent like, five months in Japan altogether. Kind of weird to skim through things and see more modern references and tech being used when it should still be the early 2000s in the comic.)

A storyline that actually takes place in 2000 in Japan could be interesting if it were researched to be accurate to the time period but that would be a little too much :effort:

In 99? 00? my friend slept over and convinced my parents to rent Princess Mononoke. It blew me away, and I never looked and DBZ or Pokemon the same way again. It set the bar so loving high that it ruined Akira and Ninja Scroll for me when I saw them a few years later.

Idk how thatd ruin Akira. Diff studios and directors obviously but i think Akira is primo 80/90s anime movie.

The only thing that ruined Akira for me was the manga. Because there was so much stuff that had to be cut from the movie and it should have been a series.

One of the real snobby things in the early anime scene was to go "Akira only adapts a tiny amount of the manga" to newer people.

So the Borat sequel reminded me I never actually saw the first one apart from a few clips in college. I do remember that the other actor from the first film, Ken Davitian, appeared in Fox News' failed Daily Show attempt. I think it was called the Half Hour News Hour. God, I forgot how awful that was.

Which is strange, because the IRL Largo was purged from the creative process about 18 years ago and the comic's been unfunny ever since.

When I was in college (early 2000s) I jumped on the file sharing craze and downloaded many mp3s and music videos, among other things. The thing that stands out for me with the music videos was the "splash screens" that would be inserted for the first few seconds. I screencapped 20 of them and made an album, linked here since some of them are :nws: https://imgur.com/a/3IpT1tH

Here are some of the safe examples:

What is the proper term for these, if there is one?
