W2 holds up a lot better, but is a weird place to just dive in. For background, this gives you plenty, and then the in game character descriptions and such fill in any other blanks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXfW2LWK3m4

It seems like I had this solved previously, but I just built a new machine, and now I have controller UI prompts showing up on the screen with apparently no way to get rid of them. I can't seem to find any suggestions online that work--just a lot of people bitching about it. Screwing with .ini files seems to do nothing. What do I need to do to get the game to ignore my controller--I have to be missing something, right? Or do I seriously just have to unplug my controller (or disable it through Steam) every time I want to play?

The combat is decently fun, but crafting and stats and such are needlessly complicated and not the strength of the game. You won't get much trying to min-max combat stuff. Dress Geralt up in the coolest looking gear. Pick skills that seem fun to you. Go with whatever combat style appeals to you (swords, Signs, alchemy). The early game can be challenging but the difficulty drops off hugely. You've read the books so I'm probably preaching to the choir here. W3's strengths are in the Role-Playing aspects of RPG. The actual vidya game part: loot, crafting, combat system, progression etc. are pretty average. They're fine. Fritz the Horse fucked around with this message at 06:12 on Nov 16, 2020 |

Well, that was that. Finished Blood and Wine. Well, the main story. Although there's till a dozen side quests and a LOT of PoIs. And a Gwent tournament I have to win as Skellige. And 30k+ gold needed to finish my armor crafting. And the option to go back and get the good main quest ending, which I THOUGHT I was on track for, but apparently what I thought were meaningless conversation points were Important. Yeah, this poo poo AGAIN. The post-script was nice; at least I didn't get the Dandelion ending.

I'm listening to audiobooks and got to the interlude in Season of Storms. The story perspective from Dandelion was absolutely top tier. Still laughing at how perfect it was

Just about done with white orchard now. This game is great so far. Killing a drowner to take its brain to make a potion to save some lady so the herbalist gives me a book so that I know how to best murder a ghost is exactly the gameplay loop I was hoping for. So far I've only managed to get killed by those little ogre did blindsiding me and from falling off a bridge. I'm very excited to get out of the little tutorial area.

The game is amazing but not when it's a frustrating grind to try and find the parts you need to upgrade your potions, especially when you've killed potentially dozens of said creatures and not gotten the rare monster part. Like a Master Witcher doesn't know how to extract/butcher a monster to get the most essential components. I personally loved fast travel anywhere but I also got every single ? in Skellige and many of those were just swimming directly from one to another and then fast traveling back to the mainland.

I never thought of grabbing an increased creature drops mod. That would cut down on quite a bit of frustration with semi-unique monsters loving you. I'll have to grab that on the inevitable next playthrough.

Mods like auto-apply oils might be convenient, but it’s also totally unnecessary. The game isn’t that difficult, even on Death March.

Spending so much time in the sub menus and fussing with a huge cache of poo poo I wasn't sure I needed instead of exploring and absorbing such a beautiful world became too much of a hassle for me to finish the game. I think I quit on it about 1/3 of the way through maybe. It was still very fun but just too heavy into micro management for my taste. I'm on my third playthrough now, death march, using mods for the first time, and went with Quick Apply Oils instead and I love it. Even on DM I don't need or want oils for every single little skirmish. You just bring up the radial menu and click Y to apply the relevant oil, it's great.

I've never played any of these games or read any of these books but I bought this in the steam sale for cheap and I've been having fun banging prostitutes, playing gwent, killing monsters, getting sidetracked by every little quest and "?" location, and stealing literally everything. My favorite so far is stealing from an innkeeper's private back stash, immediately selling it back to them, and then blowing the money on hookers and gwent. I assume I am playing this correctly?

To me personally, making your own potions and choosing what oil to put on your blade to create an optimal loadout for the beast you're facing is an important part of the experience. To me, things like auto apply oils just make the game less fun to me. I'm sure that to many of you it's more fun to have that automated, but it makes me roll my eyes when people say it's an "essential" mod or that oils aren't even usable without it. Different people enjoy different experiences!

Eh, when you’re on a second or later playthrough and you already know what oil is needed for what enemy it just saves you time actually finding it in your inventory and clicking to apply it. Each oil is tailored for a specific group of creatures so you will always need Ogroid oil for Nekkers and Spectre oil for Wraiths etc. The mod just takes the busy work away for me.

Yeah, this is my perspective as well. Once you've got a decent groove and build going oils absolutely aren't necessary, but I found constantly switching out to the inventory screen to change (or re-equip, in longer fights) took me out of the game. If there were only a handful of oils, and/or accessible from the quick access menu (the same one with signs and pockets) it would've been a bit different.

I'm in SirSamVimes camp though. It might be perverse, but with old man reflexes...and especially on higher difficulties and or with enemy levelling when you need the edge - it does add to the RP of the RPG when you have to pause for awhile (if possible) before combat to prepare and plan your encounter. Even if they are your run-of-the-mill pack of drowners, nekkers.. ghouls. So my standing recommendation is to start without mods until you figure out what you like. Best build is whatever you find most fun though!

Thanks, I'll try that. Signs ended up really repetitive: pop Quen, then Igni or that purple one depending on the enemy. Or later in the game "frozen Aard massacre" every fight against humans. Replaying the game after all that time I feel like all CDPR needs to do to make it look modern is some better light model and remove that crazy hair/medallion collision effects.

I was getting killed in gwent in the city, so I headed out into the towns in search of more gwent cards. I entered an inn where a couple of knuckleheads tried to start poo poo but I diffused it, and the innkeeper thanked me for not killing them. Well I started running around the inn looking for gwent players and I accidentally punched one of those guys (which would not have happened if they wanted to play gwent) and suddenly they want to fight now so I cut their heads off and left them on the tavern floor. Since I wasn’t getting anywhere with gwent I did a story mission, but I guess the guys in the baron’s castle or whatever heard about the gwent related scuffle and now won’t let me in, so I had to sneak in through the well. Turns out the baron is a fan of gwent though, so it all worked out in the end.

Has anyone replayed Witcher 2 recently? I just did and wow it is far rougher than I remembered. - The entire plot is only explained in a giant exposition dump in the last dialogue with Letho. - The game gives you minimal context for all of the political brinksmanship between a dozen independent actors, but keeps speeding through the betrayals and plot; it doesn't even give you a world map to understand why big events like "Nilfgaard has crossed the Yaruga!" is important. - On top of that, you're supposed to make sense of random cutscenes with the Wild Hunt and Yennefer, who have yet to actually be introduced to the series. On the plus side, the characters are memorable and the dialogue is Witcher 3 level good. The decisions you make feel impactful and difficult, like should Stennis live or die, should you rescue Saskia or not, etc. In the moment I couldn't go through with letting Sile die even though she probably deserved it. But in retrospect I'm glad that Witcher 3 cut all of the political machinations out except for Redania vs Nilfgaard and made it a much more personal story with Yennefer/Geralt/Ciri.

Yeah the problem is you did a Iorveth run where none of the political machinations are discussed at all. Otoh Roche sucks and no one should hang out with him.

I’ve never had an issue following the plot, but I’d also played the first game and read the books, so I was in a better position. I still think Witcher 2 is a fantastic game with some very strong writing and character moments. It’s also when Doug Cockle really came into own with Geralt’s voice despite the first game being poorly voice directed in English.

Witcher 2 is a corridor RPG trying desperately to pretend it isn't. As a consequence the pacing is a bit off. But everything else is there and it was fun to play. It's a game on the road to CD Projekt mastering their craft.

I kind of enjoyed that one path gives you a ton of power to guide political machinations and the other gives you some key information about those machinations, but Geralt never gets both.

I'm one of the few weirdos who prefers Witcher 2 to Witcher 3. I found all of the grand political machinations (of which your character is mostly in the dark) to be a lot more compelling and down-to-earth than Witcher 3's "save the world" plot. Having the Wild Hunt as a mysterious B-plot lingering in the background also added a certain mystique that the third game lacked. Of course, I had already played the first game and had some familiarity with the setting, so it may have been easier for me. Also, I've never seen any game attempt (much less succeed at) something as ambitious as the Act 2 split. Finally seeing both acts and having all of the pieces fall into place was a moment that I'll remember forever. Jimmy Noskill fucked around with this message at 17:53 on Dec 2, 2020 |

The silver swords are fragile in that the silver plating can be destroyed. And yeah, if you actually wanted to make monster killing weapons in the witcher universe silver plated spears/pikes and arrowheads would be way better than a sword. Forever ago we talked about alternatives to witchers and my proposal was mages with a team of people in plate armor with silver tipped pikes you can just stab the poo poo out of stuff as a group.
