There's 7 reviews up on RT for it from its premiere last year at Venice, they're not kind to it: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/american_skin

David Ehrlich posted:

The only thing that “American Skin” has going for it are good intentions. However labored and deafeningly loud Parker is about the pervasive harm of systemic racism, it’s not like no one out there needs to hear it. Quite the opposite. And yet, an unfathomably ham-fisted crash course on the problems of racial profiling — one told with all the subtlety of a “Sesame Street” segment, and none of the same grace; the violence of a direct-to-VOD Nicolas Cage thriller, and also none of the same grace — doesn’t feel like it’s going to move the needle. In fact, the inanity of the film’s premise only serves to diminish the pain and the urgency that Parker is trying to dramatize. If “American Skin” asks us to separate the art from the artist, then it must also invite us to separate the movie from its message.

Xan Brooks posted:

But the thing itself is so clotted, so strident and so thickly cloaked in self-pity that its impassioned story risks becoming worryingly self-serving. This interpretation isn’t helped by Parker’s decision to cast himself in the leading role of Linc Jefferson, a noble hero driven to breaking point by a miscarriage of justice.
...
High-concept schlock pulls the crowds for a reason and Parker’s set-up certainly grabs us by the lapels. The handling, however, is as flat as a pancake, paying laborious lip-service to both sides of the debate, while an over-insistent score keeps dipping in like a highlighter pen to emphasise the really important lines of dialogue. No one in real life speaks the way they do in this film. No genuine drama is this crudely ordered drama, with its telegraphed turnabouts and conveniently-placed confessions, all building to a stage-managed plea for tolerance and unity.

FX is producing an Aliens series produced by Noah Hawley and Ridley Scott. Apparently will take place on Earth.

And apparently a new version of Shogun.

I never heard of Don Davis but somehow knew exactly who you're referring to before I looked it up.

If anyone was wondering, he was the commanding officer on Stargate and the Air Force Officer dad of one of the kids in Twin Peaks. Sadly he passed away from cancer in 08. Looking through his filmography it is genuinely surprising that he wasn't in Starship Troopers.

Baron von Eevl posted:

Yeah, it feels like a sort of "History of Violence meets John Wick" but it's a comedy.

I was slightly skeptical when it was announced, but the little bit of action they showed suggests that Odenkirk has put the work in and/or they're able to work well around and within his abilities, which the real trick.

Nobody is from the director of Hardcore Henry, which was better than it had any right to be.

Didn't do 'Who's on first' as I could not make the joke work.

But we're a bit early in the cycle for a biting parody of John Wick, and it sure wouldn't come from Leitch who I'm sure doesn't want to stop his money train. Wick-ish action movies are almost turning into genre themselves it seems.

The question contains it's own answer.

Odenkirk's a solid dramatic actor too. There was that Netflix film where he plays a guy who writes valentines day cards. It's not a good film, but Odenkirk is real good in it. He specialises in repressed rage.

Apparently it's a retcon. I guess now in the Toy Story universe, there was an astronaut named 'Buzz' Lightyear who was a hero or whatever, and they made a toy based on him that is the Buzz toy from Toy Story.

They are going way overboard with the Star Wars series

They announced two spinoffs of The Mandalorian, the long-rumored Obi-Wan project (which is now a TV series), and the previously reported series revolving around one of the characters from Rogue One.

there was tons of original content that everyone ignored because it was too easy to slam all the Star Wars or Marvel series that are paying for all of the other stuff.

There's also a bunch of terrible remakes like Three Men and a Baby with Zac Efron

My theory is the amount of series went up due to ongoing covid ruining theater fears
