One thing I used to do when I was big into it was turn on the dev cheat to have the director status printed on screen and if you watch it as you go on it pretty much does the same thing in the same places most of the time, the intervals between hoards don't really vary too much, the only thing that's noticably different is tank placements but even those after you play enough you can guess where it'll be by process of elimination

Okay I give up, what is "BG" here? The only thing I can think of is "Baldur's Gate" but I'm not sure that would make any sense in the Early FPS thread (and I didn't even know there was a multiplayer/community element to BG3, if so).

The Battle Grounds, GoldSrc mod turned Sourcemod. I still play it a bit, but I make sure to shut off any voice comms and aim especially at anyone with chuddy names. Unfortunately there's not much else out there for the weird niche of FPS games where the guns suck and the melee kinda sucks too but it's fun because it sucks for everyone. Fistful of Frags is another decent sourcemod that scratches that kinda itch, although the general organization of the gamemodes and stuff have regressed since it first came out, now it's just TDM or gungame. e:f;b

Battlegrounds - a janky but incredibly fun American Revolutionary War mod for Half-Life (the sequels are Source and are inferior). We were shortening it as we;'d been discussing it for a few posts prior. Also reminds me how much matchmaking in online game sucks - in the smaller games like that there'd be a few servers and you'd get a reputation or friends on it. I think I played Day of Defeat 90 percent of the time on one specific server (and it'd crashed if you got more than 255 kills which I'd purposely do from time to time). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq-YFW--Rkc Groovelord Neato fucked around with this message at 05:14 on Dec 12, 2020 |

Theres places that always spawn a tank no matter what as well right? Anyway, I always felt that l4d offered a more pure experience compared to 2, the new special infected didn't feel that well thought out and the melee weapons felt more like fluff, I think if they spent more than a year cranking that one out they could've polished it better. Too bad theres so many unfixed bugs in 1 since it was abandoned so fast.

This is making me curious. Are there still any decently popular multiplayer Goldsrc or Source mods out there? I’ve always preferred the feel Quake lineage games, and still play a lot of Team Fortress/Titanfall/Apex because for the most part they scratch any multiplayer itch I have. I wouldn’t mind having another game or two to jump into on occasion. Oh and by decently populated I mean I could find a game without needing discord or steam groups. A server or two population is enough for me.

Went through Quake 4 and had a decent amount of fun. The weapons get a lot more fun once you get them upgraded. I probably won’t replay it ever like the other Quakes but I don’t regret giving it a go. It feels like an adequate sequel to Quake 2 to me. If there’s ever a Quake 5, I really hope it’s more like 1 and not more Strogg stuff. SeANMcBAY fucked around with this message at 07:08 on Dec 12, 2020 |

NMRiH is very fun but if you join in the middle of a map you end up sitting around for a long time spectating and it's not 3 minute rounds. It has a really cool creeping doom powerlessness vibe vs L4D where you are essentially an action movie hero. You can almost always find a few populated servers.

It’s probably possible to make some kind of FrankenDoomCraft by grafting the gameplay on top of the original Cube engine since it’s designed for 2.5D geometry and allows for real-time editing.

I used to play Specialists a bit, but not the dumb RP servers because they were boring and I wanted to shoot people with the Raging Bull. Also used to play S&I with some goons but I was awful at it. Anyone remember Eternal Silence? That was the poo poo. One of the team taunts was "UNITED TERRAN TESTICLES!" and it made me laugh my rear end off. Game was like an offbrand Battlefront in the Source engine and I wish it wasn't dead as a doornail because it was so much fun Zeether fucked around with this message at 20:05 on Dec 12, 2020 |

Finally playing all the way through Blake Stone thanks to the BStone sourceport and this poo poo rules. It's too bad the devs couldn't license the Doom engine and pump out one more game, the setting and aesthetic are fun and its got just enough extra going on mechanically to not bore me to tears like Wolf 3D does outside the first episode. The TC Spear: End of Destiny takes a lot of inspo from Blake Stone which is one of the reasons I love it so much.

I remember the original releases of the Firearms mod being a ton of fun but IIRC there was a ton of drama around either one or more members of the team splitting off to make a Source iteration of their own so there were two versions and I still to this day don't know which one was supposed to be the real follow-up The Insurgency games kinds sorta had that point system for equipment and such but I miss the hell out of the original Goldsrc mod (Fake edit: hahaha just remembered the one beta version where most servers banned the AUG because it was one of the most OP weapons ever made)

Some of the maps were really good, I remember killing a ton of people with the revolver with the scope on it, putting town artillery markers and getting so many people on the other team killed with a steady stream of mortar strikes, rushing teams with a ton of medics so we could bandage the bodies on the ground to get back reinforcement numbers, man I miss that mod so much

Blood's got Fresh Supply, the official port to Kex, but if you want something else there's not only Raze, but NBlood, and Blood/BuildGDX. Redneck Rampage has Raze, RedNukem, and Redneck/BuildGDX. I personally really like Raze for everything but Duke, where I still use eDuke, since it allows for more mods. If you want to play Blood mods, I'd just stick with Fresh Supply because it's really easy to get them up and running (the one exception I've found is Bloody Pulp Fiction).

Including such hi-larious jokes as what if Boomer but lady? And for me the best parts of both games are when you're creeping through abandoned urban areas that are unsettling wholly independent of whether or not there are zombies clawing at your face; 1 has way more of that than 2.

I always preferred L4D2. You can point to stuff about gun models and goofier aesthetics all you want, but both the floatier Source Engine and the new mechanics they added-- the Defib, Adrenaline, Boomer Bile, Jockey/Charger/Spitter, more diverse weapon tiers-- plus the extra maps made it a much more replayable experience. Like 1000+ hours replayable in my case. L4D1 has a better crunch feel with its engine and I respect that, but I think it gets a bit too much praise and L4D2 gets a little too much poo poo.
