And then I look at the source of the things I believe: I believe that Joe Biden won the election because all 50 states have certified their elections and the electors have voted. This is documented in each state according to their laws. I believe that the election was fair because no evidence has been provided to indicate it's was not. Indeed there are 60 some odd sets of court records that clearly lay out each individual claim of irregularity and pull it apart in detail. I believe that COVID-19 is dangerous, there are over 300,000 Americans dead from it in spite of lockdowns and many people doing their best to distance and wear masks and be safe (even if the participation rate could be much higher). That these counts come from MANY independent sources, hospitals, state health agencies, federal health agencies and independent groups all just reaffirms this information. That when you compare the US response with the rest of the world the US per capita rates are woeful. Again this is sourced from numerous independent groups and agencies. Etc... And then there are the things that they believe... which are contrary to those sources above. That a presumably functionally operating person should look at "President Trump is communicating with his constituency via coded messages distributed through a website, hosted in the Philippines, known for harboring bigotry, perverse porn illegal in most countries and pedophillia" and lend that concept MASSIVE credence, such that the adherents simply discount literal tons of empirical evidence to the contrary, is just not really something that I can comprehend.

Trump won in 2016 but didn't give them what they wanted. He looked dumb even before the election and now it was more obvious than ever. Then a story came along that said he's actually going to do all those things for real. You won't be disappointed, etc., and rather than admit they may have been wrong they just dug deeper.

Apparently The Hill posted an article which was like "One weird way Trump could still be president!" which is kind of ridiculous. It goes something like this: when Pence is reading out the electoral vote counts on the 6th, members of Congress are allowed to object to the electoral count as long as it's in writing and sponsored by one member of the House and one from the Senate. Upon an objection, the House and Senate meet for no more than two hours to debate the merits of the objection, and then vote whether or not to uphold or dismiss the objection. If one votes to uphold and one votes to dismiss, then the electoral votes certified by the governor of the state are the ones that are counted. All this is already known, and it's why McConnell basically said "Don't object to them" to the GOP, because he doesn't want a vote to have to be held which will force GOP representatives/senators to have to take a public vote which will be seen as support or betrayal of Trump. So the "one weird trick" is that the Electoral Count Act where this process is described isn't really clear about a lot of things, including how objections are supposed to work. So theoretically you could have objections to a single elector, rather than the total electors from the state. So you have a bunch of Republicans object to each individual elector from each of the four states, and taking two hours for each means you delay the electoral vote count past the 18th. Doing this causes the Senate to proclaim that there's no winner by the electoral college, which means the Senate picks the VP and the House picks the President. The Senate obviously would vote Pence for VP, and due to the rules about how the House picks the President, Trump would win the presidency (because the process is essentially a mini electoral college where every representative from a state votes, and the overall winner of that state is counted as one vote, and most states have more Republican reps than Dems). I wouldn't be surprised if Q believers (and maybe even Trump himself) are buying into this, even though there's glaring problems with the idea (such as that the House/Senate don't have to take two hours to debate, they just are limited to no more than two hours).

Being able to challenge some electors without challenging the entire state isn't a problem, especially since two states split their votes, but it's such an incredibly bad faith interpretation to try to challenge each one individually. The Hill article envisioned a scenario where if it did get dragged out to the 20th, there would be a crisis as to who's President actually. The Senate would vote Pence for VP, but if Pelosi prevented the House from voting for President, then what do you do? Republicans would say that since there's a confirmed VP he takes the President's seat, but Dems would say since the election isn't officially over yet that Pelosi takes it. And SCOTUS probably wouldn't take a case about the issue since it's a political issue. But yeah imagining "what if" is pretty pointless because there's no way this scenario occurs. Though it is "fun" to look at just how broken our election system is and what can go wrong with it if you have enough bad faith actors. Sure is a much better system than "This guy got more votes so he wins."

does getting way into conspiracy theories have documented psychiatric ramifications or is it a chicken and egg thing where certain people who are already predisposed to mental illness are more drawn to going all the way down insane rabbit holes? for example, and this is tangential to Q-anon, but while everyone probably strongly suspects Epstein didn't kill himself, I also feel like normal people can also readily understand that the public is never going to get any answers and just don't delve into it much further

Much like cults can pull people in who are in a bad place, lonely, isolated, etc. Because they offer answers, conspiracy theories offer a solution to why your life is poo poo and how at least being "in the know" offers some solace. In short anyone emotionally compromised can be vulnerable.
