I'm unclear. Is that tweet saying the UK is ditching the ECHR or will still recognise it? Access to the ECHR is a right for every resident of Northern Ireland under the Good Friday Agreement. IIRC Cameron had a manifesto promise to introduce a British human rights act that would break from the ECHR, but it came to nothing largely because it violated the GFA.

The tweet is saying that the brexit agreement has penalties for if the UK falls short of the standards required by the ECHR (which the UK clearly wants to do). The wording of the original tweet implies that it voided the whole brexit agreement (hence the poster here saying to get your beans ready) but in the replies somebody then says that it only voids the accesses to the EU justice databases and that kind of thing: https://twitter.com/SimonFRCox/status/1342206951481081857 gonadic io has issued a correction as of 21:06 on Dec 25, 2020 |

Well for one, the Irish gov is being leaned on to enforce UK borders so plenty of people have e.g. had Irish visas rejected because they had rejected UK visas also and were considered a risk of traveling into Northern Ireland and on into the UK. Even if they e.g. were visiting family in Ireland just for a few days for a birthday or whatever so pretty obviously were not planning to go into the UK. https://workpermit.com/news/ireland-visas-blocked-over-uk-entry-fears-20201110 (but I saw it on twitter)

I’m trying to compare it to here in Japan where basically everyone in the government knows that Japan will not function without more immigration in the future but there’s still plenty of old bigots who have fantastical ideas of other solutions.

Samurai Sanders posted:Yeah. it was my understanding that being part of the EU meant that people from That only works in Schengen (which the UK was not part of, thanks to a grandfathered opt-out) or for permanent residents of other EU countries, which was a miniscule portion of immigrants. AFAIK the main complaint from bigots regarding the EU allowing non-EU immigration has to do largely with the HRA/ECHR as I've posted about above; specifically the EU requires that countries obey the ECHR as a condition of membership (there's signatories who don't really have to, notably Russia). That includes human rights to family life and some other rights which make people immune to regular immigration controls (to an extent) if they e.g. have a family in the UK or if they would be subject to deportation on an unjust basis. This is enforced via a supranational pan-european court and is VERY BAD according to the cunty fuckers in UKIP and the like. This also still applies through the trade deal. Technically the UK did generally follow the Schengen visa regime (but was not compatible, such that a visa for the UK was only ever for the UK, unlike Schengen visas) and there were some regulations pertaining that, but if anything the immigration regime has been made a bit more lenient after Brexit, mostly to cover the shortfall in specialised labour that would otherwise come from the EU - medical and emergency workers, engineers, etc. Private Speech has issued a correction as of 04:08 on Dec 26, 2020 |

I recall vaguely reading something about how some in the Japanese left were trying to foster better incentives for Brazilian immigrants because Wikipedia posted:The first Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil in 1908. Brazil is home to the largest Japanese population outside Japan.[8] According to the IBGE, as of 2009 there were approximately 1.6 million people of Japanese descent in Brazil and estimated at just under 1.5 million as of 2014.[1] Since the 1980s, a return migration has emerged of Japanese Brazilians to Japan.[9] but conservatives there were like "how the gently caress there are japanese-brazilians" and lol --- and also another lmao: afaik the UK depends on foreign labor since WW2, they even skirted EU norms for a long while by relying on the commonwealth to bring the hard exploitation labor no? so it is something like actually polish or croatians or italians are problematic because of the EU wage conditions, not because they are STEALING GOOD JOBS (that nobody there wants to do)
