The whole point of the dark-trains stuff is that they're treated exactly like trains RL. They're run until they break, then they're either fixed, or scrapped for parts. Things like being bricked off in a tunnel, or turned into a generator were things the writer had seen happen to trains that couldn't run anymore, so had them happen to the characters in the story.
