I got a degree from a state school in psychology and I work in capital-T Tech in a major American city and I don’t know of a single person who has ever been “hazed” like this. maybe it’s different if you’re living in SF working at startups and pitching to 26 year old private equity psychopaths  tech workers should organize like any other workers and yeah the interview process is bad but gently caress it’s still a pretty cushy job for the most part. I much prefer wiring code in a nice office to teaching, working retail, waiting tables, or painting houses.

For a STEM field, IT is remarkably flexible on your formal schooling, at least in my experience. If I remember the details right from what I heard when they were hired, my old sysadmin team a few years ago had one person whose degree was actually in French literature, and another who dropped out of music school and never actually graduated. They didn't even start getting into computer poo poo until after college. One proved to be a goddamn wizard at SQL stuff, and the other did a ton of automation that ended up saving us quite a bit of time and effort.

"Hazing" is an exaggeration but I have found bay area IT companies to be intensely demanding and often ideological rigid about how they hire people for direct employment. Like, if you want to work on an XYZ application and haven't built two of comparable scale already, at least one of which used the same tech stack, you can get lost. Being a white nerd with technical qualifications is not an easy ticket in and the industry would be devastated if all the immigrant labor (much of it not directly employed but contracted) suddenly vanished.
