I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

While there's lots of people bitching about Cyperpunk 2077, I've noticed something I like: cars I steal stay where I leave them. It's nice to walk by a place like this:



and be like "Oh yeah, that's where I had to ditch the car mid cop chase two in-game weeks ago."

It is weird that the game culls NPCs that you are actively looking at sometimes, but not cars you haven't used in 20 hours.

I think I've just found the most elaborate pun in Dragon Quest Builders 2 (second major area) - Goldirocks and the Three Bars My god I had no idea that's where they were going with that.

Really the only annoying Batmobile parts are the stealth tank sections (which were real bad), but otherwise driving it around felt awesome and diving into it/jumping out of it looked great

I didn't mind the Batmobile too much once I got used to it, but the stealth sections can gently caress right off.

Dead Rising little thing I appreciate: Generally the survivor AI is terrible and it's regarded as such for good reason. However, I will give Capcom points for having the survivors react to a TON of unrelated things you are likely to do just while running around with em in tow. They recoil in awkward horror when you put Frank in kids' clothes. They do a fist pump or congratulate you when you level up. They laugh when you slip and fall in blood or put a Mega Man helmet on a zombie. They cry and panic when you let a member of your survivor group die. Or when their stupid suicidal AI drives them into a giant mob of zombies for the 11th time and that one was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Similar note, I love that the AI system in the original game is so fickle that a decent group with guns and a waypoint to go for turns into a nigh unstoppable death squad somehow.

I think that's mostly because they get unlimited ammo and never have to reload. And also when they have guns they won't have to run into melee range and get themselves grabbed like dummies

Set them up with some shotguns and they'll hold a point forever. Unfortunately leaving them on a different map still kills then just as fast, even if they're fully loaded


Man I miss those games though. The first two were so fun till they started messing with the formula and removed the time pressure. I think that's actually one of my favorite little/big thing about games: games with "fixed" time limits where they're actually fairly generous unless you're going for 100%. Like lightning returns, persona post 3, dead rising

I know a few people for who any timer just completely ruins their enjoyment.

Don't know exactly why, and am not gonna try and analyze them, just that they abhor anything with a timer, even if,as you said, the timer is so generous that it may as well not be there

I've gotten over it now, but playing games where the entire thing is on a timer just gave me a constant, unpleasant sense of mild anxiety.

I haven't gotten over it, I think Majora's Mask is about the only example I can think of where it added something that outweighed my dislike of the mechanic.

The key for me was realizing that in 99% of cases the time limits are unbelievably generous and even if you do gently caress up there's usually a way to fix it.

With Dead Rising you just have to ignore the timers for a bit and think of it like a rougelike or something. It’s absolutely not designed to be 100% done in a single play through, it’s meant to be played multiple times until you’re able to do everything

Dead Rising 3 also doesn't specifically get rid of the time pressure, it's just way, way slower by a magnitude of a few real life hours. Nightmare Mode speeds the timescale back up such that it plays much more similarly to the existing Dead Rising formula where you have to be efficient and plot a route, know the game and combo weapons well, and so on.

Dead Rising 4 though... That game doesn't belong in this thread. there are no good little things about it

I thought the timers in both Majora's Mask and Dead Rising were cool. Yeah, they invoked a sense of anxiety throughout your gametime but I felt like that what they were supposed to do. In the case of MM, the friggin' world is ending in three days and at least you can time travel back! In DR, you're spending 3 days in a mall overrun with zombies. Yes, there is a helicopter coming back to retrieve you BUT what if you don't survive?

Also, this especially in DR and is more I suppose to the roguelike-side of things is growing stronger and more knowledgeable each run. Like after a dozen or so runs, you're not so afraid of the excons in the hummer... You know how to avoid them or just throw them out of the drat thing. Or with any zombie that gets in your way, you just suplex their dead rear end.

Also, if you talk to Jessie after Case 1, she says nobody would blame Frank for just staying in the Security Room overnight. And if you want to, you totally can just sit there till the 9pm aggressive zombies go away in the morning. You miss TONS of content, some of it really helpful, but there are no more main cases until the morning of Day 2 and it even automatically starts Case 2 if you're in the Security Room at 6am.

There is very little encouragement from the game to try and save everyone and I think that's neat. In fact, having just played it yesterday, the specific wording is:



Escort as many as possible to the safety of the Security Room. They make no illusion that you will save every life, or go out of your way to investigate cases that are short on time or you're uninterested in. The subtle wording takes the time pressure off just a little bit to encourage the player to do whatever they want, whether it's plot stuff or not.

Time limits in games (and just stuff happening in real-time in general) is really neat imo. one of my favorite games to do it in recent years is the sexy brutale, where you're tasked with saving a manor full of people getting murdered by piecing together how they die and exploring the time loop you're in to try to save them from death. my favorite bit, though, is that the entire game is set to a soundtrack that plays for the entire loop, with sounds and events in the song happening as the deaths occur across the mansion, letting you get a sense of how long you have until the next events happen and contextualizing all the things that happen in later locations when you're elsewhere at the same time

it's been a few years since I played, but I can still listen to that and go 'yeah, that's when X happened, that's when I needed to go do Y' and it makes me want to do a replay

I do feel that sometimes games like majora's mask + dead rising fail a little bit at underscoring that it's okay to fail, and it's almost impossible to save everyone (or at least almost impossible to do it your first several times through)

I liked coming back with all my level ups and combo cards in Dead Rising 2. That plus knowing the area better and better really made it feel like Groundhog Day But With Zombies. Or maybe Live Die Repeat but With Zombies.

In Dead Rising, I think after you get the best ending, it'd be nice to have unlocked a mode that sent you through the main story, but without the timer.

The superhero MMO subgenre was kinda just subject to extremely bad luck. City of Heroes released about six months before World of Warcraft, so it, like every MMO around at the time, really had the wind taken out of its sails and essentially relegated any advancements they made to evolutionary dead-ends for the longest time. It had a drat good lifetime despite that, but it was always relegated to 'cult hit' because of it.

Then a few years later the subgenre had another chance with Champions Online, but that suffered from the worst publisher it could've had; Atari made pretty much the worst choices it could at any given time, and drat near starved it to death. I suspect Atari got involved because the original plan for CO was going to be a Marvel MMO, so when Marvel pulled out and they ended up with the Champions license instead, Atari had a lot less enthusiasm and a lot more 'gently caress it'. They tried to have Cryptic literally start a new MMO every year, which was... patently absurd to everyone that wasn't Atari, but that's why Star Trek Online and Neverwinter happened and subsequently overshadowed CO. Going free-to-play could've worked out well for them, but they made the mistake of having their free-to-play approach designed by the people who were still subscribing, which was basically only the people who were always going to subscribe (or people who'd gotten a lifetime subscription, and so would never pay again anyway) and wanted non-subscribers to be second-class citizens. The only stroke of luck Champions had was being bought up by Perfect World, who at the very least understand MMOs and the value of keeping around the old-timers, so CO will never die, which is one point in its favor.

The only other one in play is, like... DC Universe Online. And that I don't know much about, but I got the feeling it was launched as an intended competitor for that Marvel MMO, and so when that never materialized the whole plan lost a bunch of momentum.

I like the final chapter in Dragon Quest Builders 2. - in A void dimension representing Malkoth's true form, using dead parts of his demon form to build a structure to protect all the monsters living there that aren't ready to die as part of their Destruction-worshipping suicide cult. They asked for a bunker, and hte main character lays out a blueprint and they're like "THat doesn't looks like a bunker?" and the MC's just like "gently caress a bunker. I'm building an Ark! We're outta here!"

Just waiting for the switch to charge. :P

I don't like it when you're watching me eat.
I've been playing Dead Cells recently and had a funny thing happen.

For anyone unfamiliar, Dead Cells is a 2D platformer roguelike. The levels are randomly generated and so often you will get platforms that are just wide enough for you to catch from below, stand on and then jump up to the next platform. There is one level called ramparts which has falls to bottomless pits, which most other levels do not have. I got into a situation where I knocked an enemy off a ledge and he fell onto a small platform just below the ledge. These enemies can move sideways, but do not have any jump or climb mechanics. I stood there watching him for a few seconds trying to figure out how to kill him so I'd get credit, when "YOLO" appears over his head and he walked off into the pit. The enemy suicided just to deny me my kill.

In any other game I'd expect the game AI to just leave him be there and I'd either have to figure out something or get on my way. But no, I guess they thought of another option.

Same here. I’ve never played another game where I could pull together a full group of 8 players in under a minute. Even in its waning days and even now in its secret revival I can have a full team in the time it takes to freshen up my drink. Yet it is an impossible chore to put together a 3 person team in Destiny without multiple external systems.

DCUO is still going and getting updates. In fact, I think it even got a Switch port at some point?

I played it for a while and launch and found it pretty fun. It was more of an action RPG than a typical MMO though, and I think that added a lot to it.

This reminds me that CoH had something that's definitely fallen away from MMO game design (and game design as a whole, really): extremely specific player skillsets.

My main in CoH was an Electric Melee/Electric Armor Brute. He was extremely good at fighting a lot of enemies at once, especially if they did energy damage, since he had capped energy resistance, a way to immediately recover stamina, and more AoE attacks than single-target ones. However, he was just total dump at fighting singular bigger enemies, especially if they used a damage type he was bad against. Meanwhile, I had an alt who was an Illusion Control/Radiation Emission Controller who was the exact opposite: basically useless against groups of enemies, but could completely lock down a single target, no matter how big that single target was. Both of those characters, by CoH metrics, were completely fine to exist in the exact same game.

I now play FFXIV, where my spitballed idea for a status effect-focused character gets shot down because it's only useful against groups of enemies, making it basically worthless.
