Probably still behind Mean Gene. I was reminded on a recent Between the Sheets (I think) how for his paid hotline deal Gene teased 'a former world champion has passed away' and he really, really wanted you to think it was either Flair or maybe Dusty because one of them weren't around at the time but it was I believe Jerry Blackwell and Gene mentions it in the very last line of the call. Gene was making crazy money off of that, too.

Good lord, Gene. What a fuckin' worker.

I haven't heard the original audio, but I read somewhere that he said something really lovely about Brady Boone (Battle Kat) when he died. Like that most people had never heard of him, or something like that.

Total fuckin' silence.
Mean Gene's best trait was that he would get really into it and act outraged when a wrestler did/said something crazy. In WCW, one of my favourite bits of the amazing Ric Flair handcuff and stripping segment (Pornhub deleted the clips) is Mean Gene asking him "What the Hell are you doing???".

That's what a wrestling interviewer should be, something of a straight man but not afraid to lean every now and then.

Randy Savage: "Your mustache is crooked!"

Mean Gene: "Your beard is a little sideways, too, but I don't wanna get into that, I'm not gonna take personal potshots at you or anybody else, that's not my nature!"

Mean Gene was the best.

Gene and Pat Patterson spending the entire run of Legend's House getting hammered and playing cards was just great.

Also the time the neighbors invited Tony Atlas in and he destroyed an entire plate of brownies they put in front of him.

One of the more "obscure" Mean Gene moments I will never forget is when he tore into Malenko for losing to Jericho at Uncensored '98. It was so out of left field since as far as I remember there was never any feud or angle between the two, much less some sort of buildup. Just a dressing down of one of WCW's best wrestlers out of nowhere that had me believing they were turning Gene heel for some reason.

God, at Bash at the Beach '98 they really go out of their way to have Buffer say the Malone v Rodman tag match is actually more important than all the belts. I loving hate Hogan and also Bischoff for indulging him.

E: on the cost of buying the video library for $2-$4 million or whatever the number is.

A bare bones best of steve austin with hair 2 disc set probably sells at least a million copies at $30 each if they get it into walmart/target/FYE in 2001. And then you do sets for Flair, Hogan, Jericho, Mysterio, Guerrero, Savage, Sting.

2001 was right before DVDs took over and there probably would have been a ton of money in home video releases of stuff that hadn’t been seen in years unless you owned the vhs copy of the ppv or Saturday night/Nitro matches that were only shown once.

He might as well have been asleep. I didn't expect Rodman to go out and do a rransom something but he obviously didn't give a poo poo and fell all over the place. Malone on the other hand couldn't work but at least tried and looked like a million bucks.

But also I remember the Rodman and Karl Malone tag team with DDP and Hulk. Lol I bet that would be funny to rewatch.

Anyway, I was really sad when Mean Gene died. A few weeks ago I heard him sing for the first time. Really impressed hearing the old time Rock n Roll cover, Little Richard song. He is legit very talented. Not to mention the National Anthem he sang in a pinch at Wrestlemania 1

I feel like if he had really wanted, Malone could have had a good post-NBA career in wrestling but I understand immediately why he wouldn't want to.

I didn't know myself until told just now, but apparently it was pushed to prominence during The Last Dance when somebody from the Cavs said 'Man, Malone was a bad man!' and a lot of people went 'yeah, but not for the reason you're saying.' Anyway, link!

Well, that makes Karl Malone sound like a top 1% worst person in the world, Christ. "Can't afford $125 a week". As an NBA rookie Malone earned $225,000, his second year was $835k, and those were the only year he earned under 7 figures.

Feeling bad about how in the old Mega Drive game Bulls vs Lakers I would also play the Jazz because of Stockton & Malone.

It's a joke borne out of the fact the many of Malone's illegitimate children essentially won the genetic lottery and became professional athletes
