There were I think two little memorial signs you pass across when approaching it, which isn't great but I didn't realize it's literally the most dangerous place. Of course I was with an instructor so we didn't do anything dangerous, and it was a great experience diving along those huge cliffs full of corals and fish and stuff.

If it's the one I remember reading about, the wider site is absolutely fine and not particularly dangerous, the danger is entirely in terms of "there is a pretty tunnel to explore and swim through which will absolutely kill you if you don't have specialist equipment for it" and a bunch of dive shops that don't really discriminate between tourists who want to rent gear

Happy that he's still climbing of course (I mean what else would be do). Belayed and roped and protected climbs are still a little risky I guess? But it seems more like in the category of SCUBA diving risk where as long as you keep your gear maintained and follow the rules you're almost certainly ok. Something a person with permanent interpersonal commitments (marriage, being a parent) could do in clean conscience.

A Festivus Miracle
Dec 19, 2012

I have come to discourse on the profound inequities of the American political system.

I used to surf quite a lot. The ocean scares the gently caress out of me. I've been held under, pulled out to sea, scraped over barnacles, broken boards, gotten cut by random bits of glass in sands. Recently, an old guy that I knew disappeared while surfing, and I am about 100% certain that the end he met was not pleasant.

The sea is not so much evil, it's just well, the sea. It is billion of tons of water roiling around near coastlines and it will murder you even if you are careful, prepared, and not some adrenaline seeking dude bro who doesn't give a gently caress. The first time I ever went boogie boarding solo, I was wearing a wet suit. I was having fun on the beach, and out of nowhere, I ended up in a rip. And I could not get out of the goddamn rip. Eventually, I realized that I was just wasting energy, so I let it pull me out to sea. My guess is I ended up 300-400 yards off the beach, paddling along before I could get back in. Thankfully, the added flotation of the wet suit (and the fact I wasn't dying of cold because of it) made it so the much easier, but it was downright exhausting. Once I finally got back on the beach (like a half mile from where I started), I walked back to my car, drove home, and slept for sixteen hours straight.

After that, I got a lot more comfortable with the surf. I used to straight up hop on rips with a surf board and just ride it out to sea, but the third or fourth time I did this, I ended up way the gently caress out there. Thankfully, a dude on a jetski just happened to roll up on me contemplating a solid mile swim and get me back in. Since that time, if I ever find myself on the coast (and able to surf), I veeeeery carefully contemplate the wave forecast, and size up the beach when I get there (and look up it's reputation as well), and then have a set amount of time I'm gonna be in the water before I get back.

Though higher testosteron levels have been associated with higher risk taking I would argue that most risk seeking behavior throughout history is due to social and cultural factors like the one posted above. These social and cultural factors also have an effect on related biology such as testosterone levels. However, that males more commonly have a physiology which both make them more suited to some high risk endevours and makes them more willing to take risks probably just works as a positive feedback mechanism for aforementioned social and cultural factors.

It might be part of this too but arable land was really scarce, so any population boom basically meant that surplus population needed to settle new lands. And the options boiled down to find new lands and take new lands.

DAY THIRTEEN

Not all news from the day was happy. Rest in peace Pierre Cherpin. He had crashed on stage seven and died when being flown back to france to be (further) operated on.

The Final Day

Sam Sunderland led out on the last day and the only real question was could Ricky, starting in sixth, make up seven minutes on Benavides, starting in third.
https://twitter.com/damonrelator/status/1349930452795142147

Sunderland immediately fell behind and Benavides is leading out! KB is the blue. It seems an almost impossible task to lead out and not lose significant time to Ricky.

After WP2, KB continued to show blazing speed leading out and Ricky was still six minutes back. To catch KB he'd have to get him within sight which, for a race lasting two weeks and 45 hours of racing, is just remarkable.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349969313474752514

And... Ricky wins the stage! But by only two minutes. Kevin Benavides becomes the first Argentinean to win the Dakar (except in quads...)! Last year's champion, Ricky Brabec finishes second, just five minutes and seven seconds behind after forty five hours of racing.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1350051197433032704

Sam Sunderland on KTM was third.

This is Honda's first 1-2 on the podium since 1986.

Here's what the bikes looked like back then.

And today.

Skyler Howes finished fifth! Which is good because it includes a €5k prize which he can use to pick up a beater so that he doesn't have to ride his mountain bike to work. He really deserves a factory ride.

I've been happy to see AVB's new-found caution and hope he can finish solidly this year and then combine race craft and his flair for wheelies into at least a podium.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349945394546016257?s=21

poo poo. I've mentioned this before, but Yamaha is actually Yamaha france and as a result their bikes are WR450s with some rally kit rather than purpose-built rally bikes with real factory support like Honda and KTM. In the past their riders have crashed out but this year the bikes let them down across the board (except Andrew Short who got booted by bad gas).
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349955935993819138

Daniel Sanders has been a fantastic rookie. But, he's not entirely unknown as he did win the ISDE six days in 2019 and was Aussie Off Road Champion. The last fast Australian was Toby Price who finished third in his first Dakar and then won two. Does Sanders fourth place finish mean he'll go on to win next year?

In the cars, Nasser, like Ricky, managed to take two minutes out of the leader but Stefan Peterhansel's lead was just too much and Mr. Dakar wins his FOURTEENTH championship.

"Are you going to win again?" "We'll see"
Note how, now that it's over, nobody is even pretending that he won't win again if he keeps racing.

It's not for lack of trying. Nasser is absolutely wide open here.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CKDV8WyhRF8/

Look how nice Nasser is and how uh... excited, Sainz is to see this guy. I always feel a little sympathy for celebrities approached by random folks in the middle of a ridiculous desert race with a frustrating result but... one of these dudes is not like the other.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Util/Dakar/i-nCTZ4ST/0/c7490101/636/WhatsApp%20Video%202021-01-15%20at%2005.38.09_mp4-636.mp4

I know I'm picking on him now and it's not fair because good God it must be so frustrating to be that fast and try so hard and just know that the only way you're winning is if Nasser somehow crashes into Peterhansel and they both catch fire before getting run over by a Kamaz. But I laughed when Sainz's own instagram consoled him and chose this picture.
https://twitter.com/Carlossainz55/status/1350055749339275266/photo/1

This is just fine too.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349990956427337732

Next year, Nani Roma will be rejoined by his teammate Loeb. Who will still not win.

In the trucks, Kamaz is... inevitable. After coming in second in 2017 and 2019, Sotnikov finally finished in first, with teammates Shibalov and Mardeev coming in second and third.

https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1350066454079524866

These are the official two best photos. It's weird because neither contains a truck.

Some folks were a little melodramatic about that.

Not wrong. Just melodramatic.

Yazeed ended up seven hours back in sixteenth, but not too shabby nonetheless.

Is that lens or the car worth more?

Definitely the lens.

Saucer of milk, table two.

Prokop's ford finished ninth. Four hours and nine minutes back.

One of those pictures that makes me realize just how fun this must be and how terrible the consequences of any mistake.

I like the mirrors. They look very functional.

You think the trucks cannot find you up there? It will just make them angry.

Pretty sure these two are from yesterday.

And now it's time for Dakar winner Kevin Benavides to ride off into the sunset.

Until next year.

I’m trying to figure out what the hell that guy was trying to do on that dive, nothing makes any sense. I did some more googling. If he was trying to do the arch and had an equipment failure or got lost he doesn’t act like it, and was still only equipped to go at most in the event of like a rescue 40 meters, though you could probably get away with 50 or maaaybe 60 but the that’s reckless as hell, like BASE jumping but just stupid instead of challenging and stupid. He was also weighed with waaaay too much weight for no apparent reason.

If he was trying to go deep for some sort of record he was unbelievably poorly equipped, like he may as well been trying to EVA in space with the recreational diving equipment, his survival odds are about the same at 100 meters. Like nothing makes any sense.

I guess the best explanation I found from a guy on a technical diving forum that seems to know what he’s talking about was that this diver just wanted to go deep to show off, since he seems to be intent on filming his dive computer. That also explains why he had like 3 times too much weight and never dropped it. As far as him being a diving instructor I thought that meant dive master but he’s probably just a dipshit with a few slightly more advanced than average certs that didn’t know enough to realize he effectively committed suicide somewhere around 60-70 meters and would have nitro’ed away his ability to save himself on regular air at the pressure.

I remember seeing a big bolded box in a diving manual that said “IF YOU ARE DIVING ON ONE CYLINDER YOU ARE NOT TECHNICAL DIVING” and I guess Yuri showed them.
