Tell him about the blower!

The off-brand Lego brick sets I've gotten thus far have been fully up to par, and compatible with official Lego bricks. The recipient of the Avengers Tower is aware that it is not official Lego - I discussed with him which sets he did and didn't have. I expect a casual review from him. The only issue I've had so far is a color substitution on a Batmobile MOC (My Own Creation - an original design). The grilles should be red, and the flame should be orange/yellow:

But it was $18, rather than ~$30 it would have cost to order the bricks (used!) from BrickLink. I did find the original designer on ReBrickAble with the intent of paying for the design, but he was giving it away, so I just "liked" it.
I did order the correct color parts from BrickLink. Under $1.50 in parts, but $5 shipping...

I have another MOC coming, of an Initial D AE86.

Yeah, the shipping for Bricklink is scummy. I ordered two parts worth cents and someone from Romania tried to tell me they only do insured shipping. I'm in Germany, a letter would have been an Euro and a bit, instead they wanted 17€ shipping for a 2 cent piece of lego.

I didn't pay that and bricklink banned me since you can't cancel orders as a buyer, only the seller can. Which is against all EU consumer law but.. Uhhh I guess they don't care.

How is that $8k for just being a model, is it like selling PS5 boxes where you're hoping to scam people who are trying to buy the real thing for a price that's too good to be true?

It's custom order so the price isn't necessarily real. A real AGM-88 is 13 feet long though, so maybe they'll actually sell you a metal one that size?

Did you check zenni? The glasses I got my lenses out of on zenni were $10, and I printed my own inserts.

I’d gladly print you the inserts for the cost of shipping. $60 seems kinda steep.

I don't know whether I got the wrong glasses or my printer's calibrated wrong, but the inserts didn't fit the lenses at all when I tried. So I just said gently caress it instead of tweaking it a million times to get it to work.

e: I think it may have been the x3g plugin for Octoprint, printed straight from SD and the adapters were fine. I think I'm gonna keep my order, though, since getting the rotation right on the round lenses is very fiddly.

Honestly the best way we can be unconcerned about replicant substitution is how fantastically expensive the technology would be when it even becomes available.
It'd be honestly cheaper and easier searching the earth for that one in a million lookalike, plastic surgery what minor differences can be found and train him to act convincingly.

Are the instructions that come with the fake Lego sets on Ali anywhere near as good as official ones? I’m thinking of knockoffs of official sets.

My kid saw a video on YouTube of someone building the Simpsons house and fell in love with it but I’m not paying eBay prices for that ($500+) but I saw one (let’s call it a very faithful homage, so faithful that they used official photos of the real set) on Ali for $80. Our usual method of building is that I rummage through the pile and find the pieces and she follows the instructions to put them together (she’s 5). If the instructions aren’t decent she’s not gonna have a good time.

I've purchased three sets of knock-off legos from Ali. Every time, I've received/downloaded a copy of the official Lego instructions. My last purchase was the Millenium Falcon knockoff, and it looks like they just printed a new cover and slapped it on the real-deal instructions.

I bought two of those incredibly cheap Lockpicking sets with a transparent lock, one for me, one for my 15 year old, thinking it would be a cool activity to do with them and a fun thing to learn. Well, within 5 minutes of receiving them we were both proficient enough to open the included lock, and with about 10 more minutes of practice on all of the padlocks and door locks around our house we have come to the conclusion that locks are complete bullshit. Lockpicking is SO EASY.

Fun though. Highly recommended.

Just as a protip, don't make a habit of picking locks that you are using for something like keeping your house locked or the kids out of. Having a nonfunctional hunk of metal stuck in your door is inconvenient at best.

Yeah, most consumer grade locks are super easy and can be raked open in 10 seconds. Try some different locks like wafer locks (still easy but different) or commercial door front locks. Also, those Quikset locks that can be rekeyed are loving extremely difficult to pick, in fact I've not been able to pick one even when I needed to get in to my brother in laws house when they locked themselves out.

Foxtrot_13

Ask me about my love of genocide denial!
There are three levels of locks.

Level 1 - Garbage locks that anyone with half a brain could pick with a bit of practice.

Level 2 - Challenging for a competent picker

Level 3 - All but impossible to pick except for the most skilled (see Lockingpickinglawyer on youtube).

The reason why most locks are garbage tier is that each level adds a zero onto the price and almost no-one wants to spend thousands per lock for the near unpickable ones.

The good news is that only honest people pick locks, criminals will just bypass it by smashing windows or crowbaring something open. Deviant Ollam talks about this, it is things like underdoor attacks or shimming is what gets people through doors and not picking. Get a decent set of locks and make sure your door and window frames are up to a kicking and you will be as secure as you need it until you stick bars on the windows.

As the owner of a Neo Geo X with two sticks who modded it when it was reasonable to do so, this is the correct advice, though if you can splurge, a Vita is even better since you get everything a PSP can do with a bunch of solid Vita games and options on top of that. It's not as easy as a PSP, but it's not especially hard either.

EDIT: also I'm pretty sure you can do more than 50 games, mine does, but it also has sub-menus, so maybe that's how it does it. It's been years since I hacked it, and it's just sitting in a box because making a supergun with an MVS and some multicarts wasn't actually that expensive or hard, so now I don't have much of a need for it.

If you do remember about the submenu stuff let me know please. Also what do you recommend as far as MVS multicarts? I've still got my MVS and been out of the game for a while on what won't destroy the motherboard.

Anyone notice that AliExpress no longer lists shipping charges in the search result page?
I ordered an electric turntable, and only noticed in the check-out stage that shipping is not only not free, it's nearly as much as the item! So, I went back to search for another option, and noticed this: no shipping fees listed, anymore!
The other sellers who had this item were charging about the same for shipping, or the same as the combined item + shipping for just the item.
