I have had to accept that there's an unreasonably high chance that when I get properly drunk I do things to hurt myself and yeah, had quite enough of that. So I think the last time I got properly ratarsed was the 2017 general election night. It wasn't fun & after that I just decided I needed to accept my limits & stay within them. The UK rate of hospital admissions because of alcohol was higher than among users of any other drug cited in the report apart from heroin, and consumption of alcohol was much more widespread, with 94% of people in UK saying they had drunk alcohol in the last year, compared with 2.3% who had used heroin. Glad they made that point clear. /edit: Ireland is not one of the 25 nations included in the survey. That seems like gross negligence. peanut- fucked around with this message at 13:37 on Jan 25, 2021 |

For the 2019 exit polls I had a bottle of nice champagne and a bottle of rotgut whisky depending on how they turned out. I basjcally deleted my memories from abut 10.10pm til lunchtime the next day. Not having a reference point I don't know if that's just me being weird or whether the thread is more high than average. I had a bit of puff in my early 20s (and I mean a bit - a couple of pulls at parties - but cannabis did absolutely nothing for me, alcohol was far more reliable). I gave up smoking when I was 12 - I was a year ahead of myself at school - went to secondary school direct from Year 5 in the new money - and all my friends were older. Every time I tried to smoke I used to have an asthma attack so after about 10 cigs over a few months I gave it up as a bad job. A friend and I tried again in my early 30s (I had some idea that people who smoked were thin therefore to get and stay thin I should learn to love tobacco) but again, brutal coughing attacks, the foul taste, my friend and I would get a pack of 10 cigs in the pub, not inhale, just pull a face at the unpleasantness of it and say 'how the heck can anyone get addicted to this' over and over again. I drank quite heavily in my 20s for a while- a particularly unpleasant job for a year had me knocking back 2 bottles of Baileys on 2 evenings a week just to get through - but in 1988 after going to work 4 mornings in a row with a wretched hangover and I hadn't actually been out anywhere (I shared a flat with 7 people and one of the guys used to go to the off-licence every night and bring back loads of booze), and with an elderly (ha, my age now) secretary at work who used to set up a bar every Friday afternoon in her boss's office (he had to go to a meeting (genuinely) every Friday afternoon with the top brass) who took it as a personal insult if you didn't drink, my only option was a year teetotal which the secretary accepted as legitimate reason not to drink. I did the year apart from one evening in the Intrepid Fox where I asked for the non-alcohol lager which was kept right next to the 9% deliriums tremums and the barlord gave me a bottle of that by mistake - and while plenty of people were telling me how easy it would be - not that they were doing it themselves! - I discovered how ubiquitous booze was in 1980s Britain! Anyway, in the early-mid 2000s with the regular Thursday night after work booze ups (and if you didn't go you were Not A Team Player) where I would generally have 3 pints of lager, I started to feel very unwell and would arrive at Walthamstow tube station, heart racing, blood thumping round my veins in a very unpleasant manner, barely be able to make it to the top and have to sit for 10-15 minutes before the final few minutes walk home I finally put 2+2 together, realized alcohol was the culprit, and quit alcohol altogether. Just before Xmas last year (after over 15 years) I dipped my toe in the alcohol water again with a couple of liqueur chocolates and a tub of brandy cream and didn't suffer any ill effects, maybe I might venture into a little baileys if I can find anywhere that sells miniatures - and see if booze undiluted with food can be managed. TL:DR - not all of us What I don't get is why modern teenagers still seem to think it makes them look big to smoke cigs when every adult I know who smokes wishes they didn't. When the schools were open, there were great gangs of them under the nearby underpass puffing away, not even vaping, and there's usually a gaggle of them round the entrance to Home Bargains puffing away. I don't want to get all hippie about it, but I genuinely think everyone should do psychedelics at some point. It lets you view yourself from an external perspective and reevaluate what's important - I see it as kind of an MOT for my head.

A big duster to clear out the cobwebs in your head and give your mind a spitshine. It always makes me fall back in love with the music of words and conversation for some reason too which is nice. One thing all potential users of psychedelics should note is that although the visuals are the most commonly talked about aspect, they're imo probably the least important and strange. What you see pales in comparison to what you feel and how your mind reconfigures to work in a way that you've never before experienced. I'd compare it to installing a totally new operating system on the hardware that is your brain.

Smoking (and alcohol) remains that thing that when you are under 18 it is a Bad Thing and everyone tells you Don't Do This, but it's relatively easily accessible and once you have it there's very little consequences to get caught (you don't get arrested or fined for doing), so it's a fairly easy bit of teenage rebellion. It's not necessarily the "cool thing" to do anymore because we've pretty much banned celebrating smoking, but it's still there as an accessible vice. The problem of course is that if you start young you get addicted and carry it on to your later life.

FB just suggested a new friend for me: David Miliband..... trying to figure out why, the last public post on his FB is from 2011 and involves the Egyptian revolution, about the only thing I can think. Despite he has apparently over 3200 friends we have none in common. Actually FB has suggested a couple of people for me lately who I actually know (they're relatives) and I know they thought they had deleted their accounts, but probably made the mistake of 'deactivating' instead of 'deleting' and some activity elsewhere on the internet that links to FB has livened them up again. (I let both parties know!)

After years of therapy, medication and other stuff, 2 good tabs of acid and a pot of tea worked the best. MDMA was also good for socialising and learning how to be less introverted, though I did too much and now I can't even think about the taste of it without gagging.

Given the number of clients I have represented who with substance abuse problems, or mental health issues or who have had adverse reactions when they combined alcohol with certain medications, or clients who have used substances and been unable to look after their children, or clients who have taken substances then been caught drug driving because their vulnerable parent had to be brought to hospital, the conclusion I have come to is not everyone can do psychedelics. There is always going to be a percentage of the population who will not be able to use them. And the more mainstream they become, the more of a tease it will be for the people who can't use it. Sort of like how bad our alcohol promoting culture is for people who are alcoholics trying to stay sober.
