Every link on that seems to be coming back to the Mirror article, and the mirror article doesn’t cite anyone and came out the same time as the fake letter. Would be an expensive gamble from Celtic.

CyberPingu posted:Spectacular collapses in the league... To be fair to jre, last season Rangers were neck and neck with Celtic and fell away towards the lockdown. The form over the 10 games before play stopped was; WLWDWLWDLW It gets overdone by other fans, but it was still 17 points from 30. A lot of that probably came from the way the team was set up - absolutely over-reliant on a star striker who is temperamental and likes a booking to score goals made by the full backs - which meant that when he was suspended or off the boil slightly, or teams doubled up on Barasic and Tavernier towards the tail end of the season, Gerrard couldn’t respond quickly enough to change the team around. - Morelos up to the winter break in 19/20 - 28 goals in 35, sets new record in the Europa League. Celtic fans begging him to take up Squash as a hobby. - Morelos after the winter break - 1 in 10. But then Gerrard’s a rookie manager in his first big job, so being inconsistent and not knowing what to do comes worth the territory. Still managed to get the side from Europa League qualifiers in July through to the knockouts against Leverkusen, and so the progress* on display there (and the League Cup final ending as it did) probably did let him get away with a second potless run. The positive this season is that Gerrard has reset the team and how they play. There’s much less reliance on one striker or player. Morelos is third for goals in the side, behind Roofe and Tav. There are more assists coming from the wide players like Kent and Hagi as well as the full backs too, so it’s more balanced**. Add to that the defensive solidity and it’s wonderful. * **Fun stat; Celtic’s full backs / wing backs have managed 7 assists all season. Rangers had 3 yesterday.

Rangers have signed Wright from Aberdeen on a pre-contract. Interesting to see if they’ll be room on the McCrorie deal to get him in sooner or if they’ll leave him to Aberdeen so he gets more consistent game time. No official news on the Bournemouth pair either.

My personal, not at all bitter and entirely unprovable pet theory is that the no crowds thing has taken a lot of mental pressure off of Rangers, basing this largely on their previous yearly collapses and Tavernier admitting in a match programme that the team didn't handle pressure well. But even I have to admit that it's largely a combination of Gerrard tweaking his system (Which was obvious from the very first game against Aberdeen with Morelos dropping deep), players finding the form of their careers, and smart transfers. Which also reminds me: Rangers have basically kept all their best players since 2015, they've not lost anyone their fans were gutted to see leave. The only one I saw any regret over was Candeais, who was a pretty one-dimensional player all things considered. This means that they've slowly but surely added quality to the squad with every window, eventually leading to today when they've got a quality first xi and good options from the bench. Gerrard has signed a lot of players, with a good few misses, but the team is still largely his players, with a lot of excellent value for money signings. (Celtic have not done this, I still plan on doing a massive effort post at the end of the season to explain What and Why Went Wrong but we're talking about Gerrard here). It's still way too early in his career to say if he's actually a genius manager or not, he's had two very mixed seasons before this one and who knows how much of this year was just lightning in a bottle. But he's achieved a seemingly impossible task at a young age while being a legend of the game, he'll absolutely get a job of his choosing down south when he's finished up here.

Someone posted up the 5-0 game and the teams the other day as a comparison of how far Rangers have come, and what a job Gerrard did with the squad he inherited. What’s striking is the Celtic line up. Two players from that Rangers squad survive. (McCrorie and Murphy both on loans with obligations to buy). Tavernier has clearly been improved a massive amount, and Morelos came off the bench for Dean Windass on the hour mark. We had Sean Goss as a substitute. Celtic have 10 players from their squad of 18 left. That front line (bar Brown - maybe swap him for Turnbull) probably represents their best options at the moment? Spent the best part of the Tierney money on a keeper who can’t jump, a striker who can’t get fit and a defender who got voted man of the match by opposition fans. Should have been light years ahead.

Fun fact: Those surviving Rangers players have 2 more goals and 2 more assists than the combined efforts of the 10 remaining Celtic players this season.
