also one of the problems with the lizard sex thing is its an attempt to smuggle the fetish past a wider audience, i.e. exhibitionism. playing it off as a joke so no one can object is part of the thrill. it's like the "berth el pup" story from reddit relationships, or the askamanager post about an employee who wanted to talk about her 24/7 BDSM relationship in workplace chat

Or rather, was? Yeah, big volunteer projects, I'm sure there's a few of telling people "no" because they may leave the project and if they contribute to a lot of the structure and coding of it, you have to go back to start without 'em. But still, it's amazing that after Beyond Boulder Dome and New California we predicted Frontier to be a trifecta of horrible mods.

the fallout series have long attracted disproportionate numbers of edgy weirdoes into the community: no mutants allowed, a big cohort on rpg codex, the stuff you see on nexusmods, etc. as 'surprises' go this has been entirely predictable. it's the media climate, the closer interconnectedness of people's activities on the internet, the scale of some of these projects, that seems to have most significantly changed. i'm sure a not insignificant proportion of the pre-twitter era fan modders i've liked over the years have been crazed sexual deviants. or maybe not. but how would i ever really know?

There's a lot of modders out there who'd be a lot happier if they just bit the bullet and made a Loverslab account like they clearly want to. Straying away from the awkwardly jammed in sex stuff for a moment, the playthrough video of the NCR campaign really highlighted just how... disjointed and awful the writing is on Frontier. Not just in terms of the dialogue, but in the pace and tone of the story. Spoilers like any one cares any more: Like, you go through all the Call of Duty x Mad Max poo poo, elaborate torture scenes and the like and then boom, they drop the laser literally on you and next thing you know the tone shifts hard and you're doing the Armageddon slow walk before you shoot into space to fight a cyborg Nazi. Only then the tone slams all over the place as one minute you're doing Wolfenstein, then Dead Space, then System Shock back and forth like a child slamming action figures together, only the kid's older brother is there and keeps inserting his worrying torture porn fantasies into it as well before it ends with a goddamn Star Wars dogfight. And then BOOM, right back to the Call of Duty poo poo, and about 5-10 mins after you've seen the Space Nazi get smashed by a deus ex asteroidia, you're freeing a POW from her sex slave cage and watching her blast her rapist to bloody chunks while she screams before going into a suicidal haze. Like what the gently caress is the goddamn tone supposed to be. Even in New Vegas's darkest moments it's still Fallout, it's still got this veneer of dark humour to it. Hire a goddamn editor before you shell out for pro voice actors.

They forgot that Fallout as a game varies widely in tone, but generally individual quests stayed pretty consistent. The King exists, and the King is a silly character. But when he asks you to investigate the murder of some NCR citizens in Freeside, he's presented mostly seriously, dealing with a serious problem, some tongue-in-cheek dialogue choices aside. You don't solve the problem by getting FISTO to help you with a dance routine that will solve the problem, you talk to people until you get some clues to help you find out what happened. Then the King reacts like it's serious when you tell him what you found. It stays pretty consistent. Basically you can have a silly character ask you to do a serious thing, and you can have a serious character ask you to do a silly thing, but you shouldn't have a character ask you to do a serious thing, then a silly thing, then a really graphic thing, then another serious thing, then a very silly thing all in the same quest.
