I watched some guy on Youtube play through a couple hours of The Frontier, and it gave me some Super Skyrim Bros vibes of effort != automatically good. Like yeah, obviously a ton of effort went into this and the presentation honestly isn't that bad... but the writing is also some peak edgelord poo poo. The game design could also clearly use some polishing, my favorite bit is when you first get to the NCR base and they're all "go report to the hanger and await orders" and because they decided to model a massive to scale military base getting to the hanger takes like three real time minutes of running to get to. Also naturally there is a building right in front of where you get dropped off that isn't where you're supposed to go, lol.

Jesus that's some hell of a piece of investigative journalism in the second video. The more you actually hear from the devs, the way more dysfunctional the whole project seems to be and the way more it feels like they used That One Modder's proclivities getting outed as an excuse to save their skins and distract from their own shittiness (like holy gently caress the May stuff, how the hell did the original line even get into the mod at all, let alone remain unchanged after the VOs made the right call and completely rewrote the context). It's a big shame that the GamersTM are trying to focus criticism of the mod entirely around the dumb but ultimately harmless Lizardpeople sidequest and the devs not wanting to include the Enclave as a playable faction, because there's so many layers to unpack from the whole thing. The terrible game design, writing choices, the inability for modders to give basic criticism of another modder's work, on top of the more horrific and memeable bad decisions. "It was supposed to be Wild Wasteland" starts to ring hollow.

So, it feels like the big thing to me that really stands out about this mod is that they took Fallout New Vegas, a big open world RPG that's practically famous for its approach to letting you handle the story in almost any way you want - even if that way you want is to literally just be a cannibal and eat everyone - and turned it into a linear arena shooter that copies a bunch of other games and movies almost verbatim; spliced together with a story that generously sounds like the writers huffed their own farts a bit too much EDIT: Basically it reminds me of the Operation Anchorage DLC for fallout 3 that most people didn't like because it took an open world RPG and did its best to turn it into a heavily scripted and generic shooter. Dial up the overblown writing, dial down the production quality, and for flavor, dig up Chris Avellone and let him run wild scooting his rear end across all the rugs. You're left with something that'll give you whiplash from the massive shifts in tone even across the same questline, an interesting premise people poured 7 years of work into, and every now and again you trip over someone's undisguised fetish to really top off the experience. But you can drive cars.

a new magic: the gathering set is out, and that means a new "Day9 Rates The New Magic Set card-by-card" set of videos is out! Absolutely hilarious, I dunno if you even really need to know much about magic to get enjoyment out of his stuff, but his card reviews are among what got me back into magic.
