Early on in the final scene of There Will Be Blood, Eli says “I’ll make us a drink” to a drunken Daniel Plainview after waking him up. It’s only Eli and Plainview down there. Eli’s not mistaken about how many drinks to make for the two of them, and he confidently overdoes it.

Eli pours three glasses of (presumably) whiskey. He offers Daniel one of the drinks, which is refused so Eli sets it behind him. Eli, with his confidence visibly shaken, then holds the two remaining drinks in his hands, while he nervously gulps one of them. Though it’s not on screen, you can hear Eli place the first empty glass on the same surface as the full drink Daniel refused while he begins discussing the Bandy Tract. Eli finishes his second drink and places it next to the other two glasses right when Plainview makes him commit to proclaiming “I am a false prophet and god is a superstition.”

Plainview then reveals that the Bandy Tract is empty, and makes it undeniable that Eli’s church is empty, financially and spiritually. Both of Eli’s cups are empty, while Daniel’s remains full. Daniel Plainview double-dipped on the milkshake drainage. He’s the oil rich third revelation.

Just started watching Sunshine. They're all around the table eating goodass looking food with chopsticks. Chris Evans' character is using a fork. This immediately cements that he's probably a dick.

Several minutes later he's fighting someone. "We have an excess of manliness"

See, I would take it as the other way around - he wants to get his food into him quickly and with no fuss and get back to business.

I love Sunshine and I think Chris Evan's character (Mace) is one of the best parts about the film.

At first glance you are expecting him to be kind of a bad guy because of that opening fight and such, but as it goes on it shows he is dedicated to saving the world at the cost of everything. He was right about delivering the first payload and the cost of a detour, he puts Capa in the spacesuit because the mission requires Capa program the payload (at the cost of his own life), he is prepared to kill another crewmember to prolong the mission (at the cost of his own soul/sanity), he works on the super computer nodes in freezing cold coolant (at the cost of his own life) because everything he does is to ensure the mission succeeds and always at great cost to himself.

Yes, it is very cold persona he has and he is quite prickly but I think him being so reasonable is why the character is never just a one note get in the way kind of character you would see in this sort of film. Even the opening fight is understandable (think about how some people in this pandemic are feeling not being able to contact their family) because Capa over extending his time has meant that Mace will never be able to send a final message home to his loved ones.

Also Cliff Curtis is fantastic in it.

I really, really love Sunshine :3:

Roger Eberts review of Sunshine is so great.

https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/sunshine-2007 posted:

Considering that the movie is set only 50 years in the future, the sun seems to be dying several billion years prematurely, especially in a "hard" (i.e., quasi-plausible) science-fiction film. Man, am I glad I didn't go off on a rant about that before learning that the film's science adviser, Dr. Brian Cox of CERN (Conseil Europeen Pour le Recherche Nucleaire [European Laboratory for Particle Physics]), thought of it, too.

The sun is not "dying in the normal sense," IMDb.com reports, but in the Cox scenario "has instead been 'infected' with a 'Q-ball' -- a supersymetric nucleus, left over from the Big Bang...that is disrupting the normal matter. This is a theoretical particle that scientists at CERN are currently trying to confirm -- the film's bomb is meant to blast the Q-ball to its constituent parts, which will then naturally decay, allowing the sun to return to normal."

I'll buy that. Blasting a Q-ball to its constituent parts sounds normal to me, but then I read every sci-fi magazine published during my adolescence, and my hero was John W. Campbell Jr., the editor of Astounding/Analog, who insisted his fiction not be preposterous, but sensible and possible, such as a mission to the sun to blast a Q-ball to pieces.

But enough about me. What about the Q-ball? It's a "non-topological soliton," Wikipedia explains, before grumbling in a related article, "it is not easy to define precisely what a soliton is." Don't you love this stuff? Isn't it better than a lot of analysis of the psychological interactions among the crew?

....

So, anyway, younger girls won't like this movie, unless they know what happens under an automobile hood. Younger boys won't like it because the only thing that's possibly going to blow up real good is the sun. But science-fiction fans will like it, and also brainiacs, and those who sometimes look at the sky and think, man, there's a lot going on up there, and we can't even define precisely what a soliton is.

I first encountered the Howie Scream as the fall-scream from the original Dark Forces. I was about 9 or 10 at home by myself, playing the game. I slipped off of a cliff in the third level: Howie Scream out of nowhere then a sickening crunch. I didn't play the game much for the rest of the day.

Yeah, I think the base for TIE fighters was cars driving on a highway in the rain, so you'd hear the doppler effect of the tires but less the engine. They manipulate that further. For Star Wars stuff I think the Howie scream is the sound they used when you fell off a cliff in either Dark Forces or Jedi Knight.

The moment when he just matter of factly says that Capa is getting the space suit to return to the Icarus 2 is when I fell for him. Like just calming stating something like that with the logic that he does was kind of awe inspiring. Triply when he fixes the Icarus in the coolant tank and buys Capa enough time to get to the payload. He really is the hero for me because the big decisions he makes are the most 'leadership' like and contribute most to the success.

:D

It is definitely one of my most favourite Chris Evans' roles and I hope he likes it. I remember reading an article a while ago about all his roles before the MCU and he says there is one he absolutely detests and I have always been trying to figure out which one it was. Maybe Johnny Storm?
