The Democrats aren't the well-meaning but easily tricked and abused victim, they're the ones holding the football. That's Darmanin, he was already one of the most conservative and fash-friendly members of the formerly dominant right-wing party Les Républicains so of course Macron made him Minister of Cops. He's spent most of his tenure pushing for harsher criminal legislation and more open hostility to muslims and lefties. And he's been accused of being a rapist too. he's a fascist op

He's not just been accused - he (well, his lawyers) admitted that the facts of the case were true, that he did use his position in government to coerce a (well, at least one) woman into loving him in exchange for expediting her housing woes. Their argument is that it's not rape rape, and the woman used to be a hooker so come ooooon. I am not making this up. He also refused to celebrate gay unions when he was mayor, and marched with the gay bashers protesting gay marriage. Just a swell guy all around.

It's just that now the victims of racism are getting all uppity about it instead of letting a veil of silence and invisibility hang over it, so the masks are falling in response.

For context you have to also understand that while the US and most of Western Europe nominally tried "multiculturalism" (with so many goddamn caveats like for real), France very explicitly has never tried this. The French attitude (again, ostensibly) is that they will accept anyone regardless of <name all the ID pol things here> as long as they adopt Frenchness. Which goes as well as you would expect, because who gets to be the final arbiter of what it means to be French anyway? But then again, this is the country who had to found an institution to ensure all their colonized peoples would speak French *properly*. Can't have any deviation in language, that'd be barbarism! The centre of the world is like, 5 blocks in downtown Paris and everyone else better assimilate.

tbf the drive for multi-kulti was always also a huge con and deeply unsustainable - the state is not and cannot be a simple value-neutral provider of services in a society that tries to have some democratic input, and it ended up offloading critical responsibilities about integration onto individual immigrants, with predictably stupid results the french have handled the backlash from their empire very poorly, and it's come much closer to them than it has the other big imperial powers. especially in some parts of the periphery, and have placed a great deal of normativity into behaving frenchly - this goes back a very long way, to the early debates about what the nation is actually supposed to be (community of blood or community of ideas). the issue with this is that official french ideology is unable to recognise that racism actually exists in society, and becomes even more problematic when some of the imperial overflow comes back to the centre justifiably skeptical of the whole 'frenchness' deal. add to this fairly abrupt and very visible demographic shifts and a cultural proclivity for accepting conspiratorial narratives, the existing and very entrenched upper class (second only to britain in europe imo) and the total political paralysis that comes with the EU, and you get great replacement theory as a mainstream phenomenon i'm much more sympathetic to the strong normativism they've got wrt their language, though - you do need an organised centre of power to try to resist the anglophone omniculture which is very quickly hollowing out smaller languages. the implementation is not ideal, but i disagree that having a centralised Office Of Proper Language is inherently racist e. gently caress this is the picture thread, sorry about all the text V.
