California was and largely still is an “Eisenhower Republican” state. Goodwin Knight and Earl Warren believed in actually using the government for useful ends like funding education and infrastructure and even believed unions weren’t inherently evil. You had Reagan who cut the education budget to own uppity protesting college students, but on the other hand his position on gun control would get him cancelled in a heartbeat in today’s GOP. Today’s Eisenhower Republicans are just called Democrats. The GOP started losing the state once the party started really lurching to the right in 1994.
