Missed the house, do you even need the report that? That welded differential is hilarious, even more so if that is anything other than a $1000 drift car.

Dumb Sex-Parrot posted:Have they never seen a diff lock before? A lot of the drift racer types would rather just dump welding into the diff spider gears than invest in a proper locker. But, oh man, if that's not your dedicated track/drift car, its gonna suck to drive.

Am I looking at a home-made locked diff employing a box wrench?

PainterofCrap posted:Am I looking at a home-made locked diff employing a box wrench? You can weld the gears inside the differential to lock both axles together. This person decided to cut up a wrench to weld into the gears to do it.

I went to Hawaii for geology field trip right after college graduation. Visited the Kilauea flows when it was barley active and grabbed samples like that. The heat was crazy and you had to move quick to get some with no protection. The best way I can describe feeling/texture of lava would be silly putty. Went late in the day and stayed till it got dark, very cool to see lava at night, but then you step over a small crack and you see an orange glow through it and it freaks you out a bit. I would say the biggest danger would be the gasses or the razor like lava rocks.

haveblue posted:Why would one weld a differential (properly)? Limited-slip differentials are amazing little things that make the whole "transfer power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip" thing possible. If one rear tire slips on the ice, that side kinda disconnects itself from torsion and all the power goes to the other wheel that has traction (this is also really important for turning, where outside/inside turn radii are different). If you weld the inner gear-y bits in the differential it effectively makes both tires connected to a single static axle, ensuring that a slipping tire will still receive the same power as the one that's gripping. This enables easier drifting at lower speeds than with an LSD, which automatically tries to cancel out the conditions that allow slippage/drifting to occur in the first place. In short: It's a dumb teenager thing to do to your beater '04 Sentra with a fartcan exhaust. There are kits for like $2k but... Harbor Freight sells stick welders for $150. E: Here's an excellent bare-bones explanation of how a differential works. It's old timey but super demonstrative of a really elegant piece of machinery. shame on an IGA posted:ok so the fact that he didn't just steam explosion his face off means it's not that hot I'm pulling this mostly out of my rear end but I suspect that two things are contributing here: 1) There's a lot more water than lava so it has more of a chance to distribute instead of flash-boiling the entire bucket. I feel like most of the steam explosions we see on this thread are tiny amounts of water in relation to how much molten material there is. 2) The surface of the lava that comes in contact with the water cools rapidly and forms an insulation layer, further slowing the rate of transfer. Similar example, maybe? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qSEfcIfYbw

UraniumAnchor posted:I'm pulling this mostly out of my rear end but I suspect that two things are contributing here: Precisely. A steam explosion requires that water be trapped in a small volume, which then explodes when it boils. There's no water inside the lava, so there would be no steam explosion. One of the things they do warn you about if you approach the lava is methane explosions, though. When the lava overruns plant material, it decays rapidly and releases a lot of gas. If it's sufficiently sealed off, it can cause a pop. It tends to spray hot rock rather than actual lava, but it still burns if it hits you.

how about: that same machine but with some sort of flat platform you can use to push down on the coconut instead of having your hands dance around on the thing getting shredded?
