There are definitely random gaps at my local Asda - they're not normally completely out of things but like where in the Before Times there would be 8 or 9 different types of apple now there are 3 or 4, and the other day I had to give up and just order the toothpaste I wanted from Amazon because neither Sainsburys or Boots had it in stock (Arm and Hammer sensitive, stalkers) although they had other kinds of A&H in stock. I've no idea if this is still covid and brexit supply chain issues working themselves out or if I'm just being much more sensitive to it now - my friend did point out that in the past that Asda in particular used to have yawning gaps in the fresh produce shelves, which is true, but I still feel like I'm having to look longer when doing my normal shop. (One theory I have is that covid means that normal patterns of restocking, where they try and time things so that they're at maximum stock for the weekends when most people will be doing their big shops, are no longer valid, which is probably a bit of a bugger for them to adjust to, but that's just a guess - we've got a few people working in retail here who might be able to expand on it or call me an idiot)

Pretend you like the british bands like the Arctic monkeys. Play around with nationalist rhetoric. reference day time tv. Nod and agree with patriotic sentiment. We've already seen how that strategy goes without a compliant media. Or find a candidate who genuinely does connect with a lot of people - failing that, one who can fake it. Boris is great at faking it. I'd disagree with your point about any of this being playing the game on the right's terms. It's not, it's playing on humanity's terms as they actually exist, not the idealised version of humanity that can look at a wall of policies and ignore the person selling them. Humans have always and probably will always be emotional creatures who judge things on instinct a lot of the time, and the person presenting the policies will always matter. Who they are, who they remind you of, where they fit into society, what they like, whether they like the same things as you, whether you can imagine hanging out with them or having them as your boss. All of these things have mattered in how we choose leaders (note the word choose, barring when that leader comes and makes themself leader with a sword or a gun) since the beginning of time and always will. It's not playing the right's game, it's just playing the game. E: sorry by your I meant OF Jakabite fucked around with this message at 11:30 on Feb 28, 2021 |

You can get away with not caring about the country if you show you care about the people. Problem is communicating that - if you're vaguely nationalist and someone wanders in with flags and how great the queen is then you're on the same page, you hear a politician talk about the troubles of the low paid and unemployed there's the obvious fact that they aren't literally in that position. Organisations which do have credibility for helping those particular groups need to exist and then be seen to give the stamp of approval to that party or it's all extremely precarious. The fact that the Corbyn coalition immediately fell apart shows this as his leadership was a freak collision of social forces rather than a successfully constructed campaign where groups consciously bonded together. The fact that the unions are weak, poo poo politically and wedded to Labour no matter what (for now) are all serious impediments to getting anything resilient off the ground. There's no easy public messaging image or script to follow to get around this - either there is a powerful political base organised to put the message out and basically demand it be followed or there isn't and you're operating a glass cannon.

I noticed that you can't get any fun colours of hair dye and it was only going to Tesco and seeing what they had on shelves (cos they have little stickers on the boxes explaining) it's cos they aren't making the disposible gloves to go in the box, because those lines are presumably making gloves for PPE. Which is fair enough. That's it, that's my shortage story. It's mostly been OK here.

Having slept on it, I think that while it'd be nice to have someone that could identify with the public a bit more and help get rid of the unfair reputation that we've gathered. It won't work. Not with the press the way they are and all the levers of power stacked against us. The only shot we've got is brutal honestly and fiery dislike for the status quo that refuses to play the game. Not Corbyn but a better politician. Corbyn with more teeth. There's a few of both in labour on the left and we really should be trying to rally behind one and get prepped. I for one want to see Clive Lewis have a go but honestly I've started to look into every member of the socialist campaign group for a start and see just what we're working with here.

I've only skimmed the last bunch of pages, but imo (on a cursory reading) the nationalism conversation has been framed in a really odd way: There's loads of stuff I like about British culture. When I'm abroad, it's very obvious that there's a bunch of stuff about me that is very particularly British, making it unavoidably part of my identity, and I'm fine with that, I'm proud of who I am. I'm also proud when my local community comes together to do something nice. Also, ngl, during lockdown 1 I had a little cry when I saw the very recognisable countryside from where I grew up on the telly, the scenery is really pretty & makes me feel at home. All of this stuff is part of my identity, it's sincere, and it's all positive imo. It isn't pandering to the right or whatever to acknowledge that, and frankly I find it a little bizarre to frame it that way. If people don't feel that way, fine, but lots of people do & it's cool & good to be proud of who you are. There's loads of stuff to be ashamed of about the UK too, obviously, but I don't identify with those things & actively oppose them (as do a load of other people), so they're not really anything to do with my identity. I think you'd probably call these kinds of feelings "patriotism" rather than "nationalism" though, because the British State can get to gently caress. That's the trick the right wing pull, they make it seem like opposing the state is the same as opposing British identity, which it just isn't. Yes, right wingers exploit the existence of British identity to horrible ends, but that doesn't mean that it's intrinsically bad. You could say the same thing about Muslim identity: people exploit it to justify horrible poo poo, but that's just them being shitstains, Islam is fundamental to tonnes of very decent people's identity, and that's cool. It's not like anyone can opt out of being a product of their culture, and if the right wing want to insist that my culture means that I've got to agree with a bunch of stuff that I don't agree with, they're just plain wrong, because I don't.

i was kind of sitting on this until things cooled down - i wrote a bit. it is not intended to restart anything, just to collect my thoughts on the subject. i think i am going to save it so i can link it later. patriotism is not a synonym for nationalism, god i feel like i have to explain this a lot. they are foundationally different impulses even though one desperately paints itself as the other - patriotism is observational. you can be proud of the positive elements of the place you live and your personal identity obviously - you are proud of things that exist or have happened. i am proud of the NHS - profoundly proud of it, i considered it a greater human accomplishment than the moon landings (and it's not close). i am proud of the NHS because of what it did and, although i grow increasingly less proud, does. but hey great example - i make observations about the NHS and adjust how i feel about it based on how it sustains the ideals under which it was founded. i can be proud of some parts while disgusted by others - ashamed of it - increasingly significant chunks of it, much like i can with my nation. there is no contradiction here - you observe the good things and the bad things and enjoy a complex relationship with your nation and identity. you can even identify the things that are totally arbitrary and be playfully chauvinistic about sports or food or how "crisps" is a terrible name for chips - you can observe the ways each nation is idiosyncratic and celebrate those differences. nationalism is aspirational, which is why it is so often reactionary if not actively revanchist. there the nation is something that is being failed rather than something that can fail. it is equally unsurprising how often it is associated with ethnic nationalism - one of the easiest narratives to construct is that there is an other living within the nation and only via purification can the nation be restored to an idealized form* - be made great again. they are thought about differently and they are felt about differently - "i am proud of my nation because" becomes "i am proud of my nation" - that the complex collection of classes, history and geography has some unique abstract spirit that you can be proud of, quite often manifested via flag fetish. and the expectation of the inverse – someone failing to be proud of this spirit or show it adequate deference is making a personal attack on their identity. you have to constantly and performatively reaffirm your personal connection with this spirit – be ever vigilant to defend the nation’s honor. likewise idiosyncrasies and cultural flotsam cease to be funny little human quirks and instead are proxies for the nation and by extension the self. interestingly these are measurable effects – while I leave it as an exercise for the reader to decide if nationalism attracts people with certain characteristics or if this method of thinking literally limits your cognition like an actual mind poison but I would argue what I have spent many years observing in this thread seems to be somewhat suggested to be true by recent research. it is equally left as an exercise to the reader why this particular ideology is so promoted by the ruling classes and so widely adopted and morphed into different stripes – fascist nationalism, liberal nationalism, etc – even stretching socialist rhetoric around itself on occasion, much like sheep’s clothing. presented with minimal comment, an IWW comic from about hundred, hundred and ten? years ago, slightly edited for modern sensibilities. any similarities to today are purely coincidental, i’m sure. *this becomes even more complicated given that the settler colonialist interaction does actually describe that relationship where a parasitic minority is significantly kneecapping the potential of a nation in order to feed the imperial core, it's complicated, nationalism (and class interactions!) in response to colonialism is complicated, i always have to explain this one too lol
