flashy_mcflash posted:Thanks (and to everyone else too). I can't tie it to any tracking number I'm expecting so maybe they just put my label on something random? I'm not concerned about keeping it but wanted to know if something I actually ordered isn't coming. Sometimes online stores, like those on Wish, will send out packages to people who didn't order them. This is to get the delivery confirmation, something they can't easily fake, and to manufacture sales / reviews for their online store. Confirmed deliveries with faked, positive item reviews makes a shop look legitimate. Often the things sent to unknowing 'customers' will be innocuous objects. That way they can put something like 'earrings' or 'bracelet' on the customs form, while the package contains something super inexpensive, like seeds. For example, the mysterious random Chinese Seed deliveries back in 2020. The thing about being unable to fake delivery confirmations is better explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kbOwGzYGMk [it's like only 7 minutes of video, promise it's not an hour long sinophobic debunking review.] quote:The Agriculture Department has said the packages are most likely part of a "brushing" scam, in which a seller sends unsolicited items to someone and then posts false positive customer reviews to boost sales. I don't know if it's especially dangerous if they don't have your banking / cc information, but maybe keep an eye out. I do know there's credit card scams where a CC thief will purchase a small item to check if you'll notice the money vanishing from your account, before using your CC again for other things. I don't know if that's the case for you here. Canceling some CCs and getting new ones might be a good idea if you're super worried about that.

Out of our curiousity I bought some cheap prescription glasses from Ali. They arrived today, and my review is: the frames are very cheap, but the lenses are the proper prescription. I don't know about durability, but for 50 bucks I'm not going to complain.

I bought 4 decent pairs for $120 cad last year.

The only pair of glasses I bought from Zenni gave me a horrible migraine that was so bad that I threw up in the middle of the night after wearing them a day. Might've been my fault for not getting a proper IPD, but it made me never want to order another pair of glasses online.

How bad of an idea is it to order phones off Aliexpress, if its stuff like Blackview which ostensibly have official stores on the site?

Ask in the yospos or tech forums imo as they'd know better. I'd say it would be a terrible idea. Best case you get a extra load of spyware in addition to the usual facebook / uninstallable app poo poo. Worst case you get a defective battery that burns your apartment down.

I’ve bought some “official store” electronics before and it’s been fine. Wasn’t a great deal compared to amazon but I dodged sales taxes so it was worth waiting longer for in the end. I’d consider it if you can wipe the rom and install something you know is clean, but I’m not into that whole scene so I don’t know.

I've bought several Xiaomi and an Ulefone for my parents and they've been fine. They could be sending all your data to the Party, but is that so much worse than google, really.

With fair warning, I don't know how different it is from Ali besides being better organized. I ordered a couple things from there and the shipping time was just about the same, maybe slightly better. But if you cross-reference you'll find a lot of the same stuff from the same sellers. Organization isn't worthless, though. Looking for those fake Lego exhausted my google-fu.

Haha amazing ! I just got this USB KVM switch, about $15 shipped. Works fine and makes a huge difference to my WFH ergonomics, since I was often too lazy to switch from my personal desktop and worked on the laptop in a horrible posture. The remote toggle button is great, though I know think I should've bought one with HDMI or DP. My monitor has multiple inputs but I have to switch between them through a menu

I've switched back to zenni. for people who order from zenni, make sure to get the $4.95 anti-reflective coating. it's miserable without it

It wasn't really an option for me since it has to be on VPN and there are restrictions on running random-rear end software, but could definitely be a solution for someone. Or even just remote desktop I suppose. E: check out this disclaimer mobby_6kl fucked around with this message at 10:24 on Mar 4, 2021 |
