should probably do neither if this is what 'suppressing insane reactionary ideologies' looks like. Or maybe some third option that's also less bullshit.

i don't think the US military talking about seizing positions in SE Asia is making the point you think you're making

Contributing to U.S. efforts of informational warfare, the depoliticized and ahistorical fallacy of “Chinese supremacy”—sold, largely, to North American and Singaporean audiences—appropriates the specificity of white supremacy while bolstering the long history of neocolonial Singaporean anticommunism. Ultimately, it seeks to naturalize U.S. hegemony as a benevolent force in the face of impending Chinese “invasion,” manufacturing consent for the further militarization of Asia while obscuring the structuring force of U.S. imperialism in Singapore, Asia, and beyond to the detriment of true anti-imperial struggle.

"The White Man's Burden: The United States and the Philippine Islands" (1899), by Rudyard Kipling, is a poem about the Philippine–American War (1899–1902), which exhorts the United States to assume colonial control of the Filipino people and their country.[1]

As a poet of imperialism, Kipling exhorts the American reader and listener to take up the enterprise of empire, yet warns about the personal costs faced, endured, and paid in building an empire;[1] nonetheless, American imperialists understood the phrase "the white man’s burden" to justify imperial conquest as a mission-of-civilisation that is ideologically related to the continental-expansion philosophy of manifest destiny of the early 19th century.[2][3][4][5]

In the United Kingdom, Third Way social-democratic proponent Tony Blair claimed that the socialism he advocated was different from traditional conceptions of socialism and said: "My kind of socialism is a set of values based around notions of social justice. [...] Socialism as a rigid form of economic determinism has ended, and rightly".[7] Blair referred to it as a "social-ism" involving politics that recognised individuals as socially interdependent and advocated social justice, social cohesion, equal worth of each citizen and equal opportunity.[8]

China's poverty threshold fits its own social and economic development level, a spokesperson for the annual session of China's national legislature said Thursday, rebutting claims the country had intentionally set a lower poverty threshold.

The current poverty line — per-capita annual income of 2,300 yuan ($355), set in 2011 and adjusted annually for inflation — is higher than the World Bank $1.90 per person per day poverty threshold set in 2015 when accounting for purchasing power parity, said Zhang Yesui, spokesman for the fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress, the country's top legislative body.

Desperate to leave China, Ali paid more than 100,000 yuan ($15,000) to human smugglers and made his way overland through Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia, where he received a Turkish travel document.

In Turkey, Ali drifted in Istanbul, working construction and electrical jobs for $300 a month. Within two months, his brother said he had met people who could take them to Syria, where they could learn weapons training and return to China to “liberate” their friends and family.

the funny thing is Taiwan, the 'country' not the island itself, is actually a few feet from mainland because of Kinmen and maybe Matsu as well

that island is Taiwan but those skyscrapers are in mainland

Antonymous

also in the report that certain groups in china face reproductive rights issues or indoctrination or sexual abuse... well yeah but those are things that can and do happen everywhere in China. might as well mention that uighurs cannot own property and cannot vote their own party into power or whatever. sucks but its not specifically targeted to the ethnicity, region, or really targeted at all

also I found out uighurs call han chinese 大陸人 because for some reason there's a lot of 新疆 folk in LA and even tho it doesn't really make sense it makes sense you know

Because Mao knew walking over to take these 2 islands would make the defense in Taiwan island easier and encourage independent sentiment in the long run. It's like "cutting off the umbilical cord".

Same reason Beijing is not shutting down ECFA.

Getting a bunch of fishing boats, going to Kinmen, getting their poo poo kicked in because they didn't bring anti-armor weapons, and then retreating was a big defeat for the PLA. It's not talked about publicly but it was a subject of PLA thinktanks for decades.

The PLA has come a long way from reverse Dunkirking an island but the institutional trauma of getting their poo poo kicked in, which is also a big thing for the Revolutionary Army, makes them not want to be eager about committing to an insane naval invasion. Naval invasions are super complicated and difficult and even D-Day was almost a failure at much less of distance than Jinmen and Mazu, let alone Taiwan proper.

it's honestly starting to feel like a parody at this point. there's a "new" one of these reports like every goddamn week, all of which are from a completely different "foreign policy" think tank that are all conveniently located in washington, D.C. and staffed by the same rotating cast of charlatans
