Lubchansky kinda has a "right-wingers would become socialists if we just ran my preferred candidate" thing going so it doesn't surprise me he sees those as past battles

Make no mistake, they would love to continue to do unto gay people and black people what they're currently doing to trans people. D.N. Sure, but it's more the final panel where the guy says "You think we might be wrong again?" This implies he thinks "We were wrong on black and gay rights" when they absolutely don't think they were.

I don't think the comic is meant to be about self-identified bigots who are comfortable with their categorization.

Twelve by Pies posted:The problem with this cartoon is that the premise assumes that the right has given up and accepted black and gay rights, when they haven't. I would have said the problem is the converse; the premise assumes that all the off-screen people who supported black rights also went on to support gay rights and so on, and that the only people opposing them were the same group every time. In reality TERFism is a perfect illustration of how FYGM is as much a thing for rights as for everything else. Terrible Opinions posted:Not right wing but plenty of people who at least in their younger days identified as liberal should have that reaction. Like Rowling has always probably have a bigotted world view but self identified as a not-bigot and presumably thought that because she made allowances for people that society explicitly said to in her earlier years to avoid being bigoted against. Always couching TERFy poo poo as "oh well I don't hate trans people I just have concerns". Same sort of doublethink used by the bigots who made the 1994 crime bill, despite supposed opposition to bigotry. Or take any given obviously fake story about North Korea or China that your average lib will take on face value because of orientalist poo poo they believe despite thinking of themselves as not hating people for being Chinese/Korean and thus being a not bigot. And it will continue into the future. Someday, probably even within our lifetimes, there will be a version of that comic with a fourth version of that panel. It might have a message that we today would find outrageous, or perhaps even one that we're too blinkered to even conceive of right now. The real test of all our characters will be which side of the picket lines we're on when that happens.

I think people are reading waaaaaayyy too deeply into the Lubchansky cartoon. The point is that the same stupid fearmongering arguments have been used by bigots since forever and it's never been right because they don't hold any genuine value except hate. No need to look for "Nonsense this is an election year" where it doesn't exist. JerikTelorian fucked around with this message at 22:03 on Mar 10, 2021 |

The real test of all our characters will be which side of the picket lines we're on when that happens. When my great aunt was 85, I had a conversation with her about a television interview she had seen the previous day with Caitlyn Jenner, and she said that she had never known that there were trans people before she saw that interview, and that even though it was clear to her that Caitlyn Jenner was a selfish piece of poo poo, as she was watching she thought about how there must be kids out there who were also trans and had also maybe never heard about trans people before or not had much exposure to famous people who were trans, and so she was glad that Caitlyn Jenner was on tv. That's the standard I've decided that I'm going to try to meet when responding to human events or situations that I have never heard of before.

Speaking of Agatha Christie, anyone know if there was much outrage when that one book with the ten little something something got it's name changed to something that'll probably also have to be changed one of these days? How about Ten Little MAGA-Men?

I might as well note that there's a thread in TGRS originally devoted to the question of the use of the term "indian" as a pejorative and the consensus (including official positions by several native american governments) is "are you joking?" It's actually the foreword of one of the Hillerman books.
