Of all the cataclysmic dangers that come up in this thread, the most unnerving one to me is still the basic unshored trench.

Just a hole in the ground that can kill you dead, gently caress. Requesting your OSHA trenches please.

I've probably posted this one here before when the topic of unshored trenches comes up, but I'm posting it again.

Years ago I was drilling at a site that was contaminated. The owner of the property was attempting a DIY remediation system, by injecting some snake oil "compounds" in the the contaminated area.
At one point, he cut out a piece of floor in his shop. Probably about 3 feet wide, maybe less and about 20ish feet long. Then he dug a trench the length and width of the cut and probably 7-8 feet deep. Dude had a step ladder down in to it, that barely reached the top of the trench, let alone sticking 3 feet above, or whatever is proper for such a thing. And absolutely zero shoring. His aim was to drill holes horizontally along the trench walls and "inject" this snake oil substance to break down some oil contamination.

I'm not even sure how the trench stayed open as the majority of the soil was sand with just a little bit of silt.
They had a garden hose "incase the walls collapse, the guy can run to the hose and breathe through it until we dig him out".

There's also a strict limit on how long a tube can be and still breathe through it, else you're just cycling stale air in and out of the tube and never actually drawing any fresh air in.

Oh my god that is horrifying, thank you. How would someone run to the hose location during a collapse, though? Feels like another layer of bullshit on top of an already unsafe situation.

Clearly you should be breathing through the hose the entire time just in case

The hose should be running at all times so you can 'float' to the top in case something goes wrong.

I have no idea. It was more than a decade ago so I may have forgotten a few details. Like maybe there were two hoses?

ERM... Actually I have stellar scores on the surveys, and every year students tell me that my classes are the best ones they’ve ever taken.
Here's a fun diagram from that Review of Criticality Accidents publication.

Also I have a new favorite one from that document: some Soviet workers at Mayak created a criticality excursion by tipping a container onto its side to dump it out instead of siphoning it as specified. The solution initially had favorable geometry of a big flat puddle at the bottom of the vessel, but when they tilted the vessel 45 degrees it sloshed into a more compact configuration and, to quote the phrase that appears again and again in that document, "the operators reported a flash of light and the radiation alarms began to sound."

It was also OSHA In that the wings had edges sharp enough to be a danger to ground crews. They made protective guards for them.

Happens with other aircraft too; the joke is you can tell a Cessna pilot from a Piper pilot by which one has diamond shaped scars on their forehead

Trailing edges of wings and some control surfaces of most planes have pencil looking deals hung off them to wick static charge off the airframe and back into the air. They are called static wicks and if you want to avoid stabbing yourself with them, you probably want to take them all off when they enter your shop.

Instead of taking Elon Musk directly to Santa Rita Jail and throwing him in gen pop for a few months while awaiting a hearing (as happens to most prisoners), Alameda County just rolled over and let Elon Musk open his dumb Tesla factory without any consequences. This is encouraging other businesses to defy the stay at home orders.

Even the best parts of this country are full of human garbage. It is depressing.

Ramming wasn't common, but it's something that pilots did in WW2. The Royal Airforce derailed V1 (cruise) missiles by giving them a push with their wing. Late in the war, the Germans tried to make plane rammings a thing. They were producing more planes than pilots and in order to reliably take down a bomber, they had throwaway planes that would intentionally collide with and shear off the vertical stabilizer from bomber planes. Didn't work out.

In the V1 case. I don't believe they actually touched. Just getting in close and bringing the wing up under the V1's wings would disrupt the airflow enough to flip it over and make it crash.

I did that once - sorta. Doing the walkaround on a Cessna 152 trainer, thinking about the weather report saying fast moving showers passing through. So like a dumbass, I'm checking out the sky and sort of crab walking along the trailing edge of the aileron. "What they talking about? Barely a cloud..."

Smack!

Not a wick fortunately, but that thing was basically like a sharp edge on a corrugated garden shed and at eyeball height. So I had crusted blood on my temple as I practiced touch-and-gos that day.
