I'm a white kid from a working class family who excelled academically. But my parents also made conscious commitments to my education with what money they had, I had all kinds of books and a full encyclopedia set that they surely didn't buy for themselves. My dad worked double shifts at a glass factory to get a computer in the house in the 90s, because he thought it would be an important thing for me to have. I was incredibly aware of class differences growing up because I was always in the AP classes with the rich kids but never had any of the other rich kid trappings. My parents were good parents. I just wish they had been a bit better about mental health so I didn't have to wait until my 30s to work out that feeling depressed all the time isn't just the normal state of the world.

When Trump was in power, the cages were a conscious choice because the cruelty was the point When Biden is in power, the cages are an unfortunate necessity and we can't just *not* keep kids in cages, and we don't have any alternate solutions When Obama was in power and built the cages, they were just a pragmatic solution to an unfortunate problem and it was meant to be temporary, but alas. Also radically expanding the reach of ICE into every city in a way even Bush didn't accomplish was just good bipartisanship

It's in a college town that's simultaneously the first place north of chicago's loop you can own single family home waterfront property, so the rich are RICH and then it falls off. Property taxes are much higher than in chicago, teachers are well paid. So when the superintendent is trying to solve a testing gap problem between races (second only to Berkeley high school in the nation) , it's almost certainly masked entirely by class - wealthy parents , tutors, stay at home parents who can help with homework and aren't exhausted from two shifts in a row, etc. There's no solution and a lot of animosity. Doesn't help the reparations plan instantly changed into handing money to the alderpersons friends and their preferred banks rather than just doing straight cash
