It's extra dumb because they're treating Pepe Le Pew as, like, the latest target of the left to show how ridiculous cancel culture has gotten, but I remember people talking about how he's probably not a great figure for kids to see and find funny at least a decade ago. The critique is nothing new

Oh poo poo, that means we can't be more than 3 months away from "how can complain about cartoon tobacco use when cartoon piano fall on cat?" again.

Who could have possibly predicted that the Venn diagram of people who complain about cancel culture, and those who think women are objects to be played with at will, is a single circle.

Kids don't see pianos fall on cartoon characters and then go drop pianos on each other. Why does anyone think they'd see cartoon characters smoking and go and smoke?

Pepe Le Pew has to be one of the most blatant cases of "Yeah that was probably kinda hosed up to teach kids" and they're still trying to act outraged about it. They'll say poo poo like "When I was a kid we were smart enough to not blow ourselves up because of a cartoon!" in response to old cartoons being censored, which is also not really fair because I'm sure the most limiting factor was access to dynamite. Were they smart enough to realize they shouldn't pester women to the point of sexual harassment though? Observation says, no.

The core joke of Pepe le Pew is "Frenchies can't keep it in their pants lol" mixing with with "He is a skunk so the advances are unreciprocated lol." A core tenet is that Pepe le Pew is weird and not like a Good Red-Blooded American Man, and so he is not to be emulated. So why are Facebook Pearl-clutchers complaining that he's being called a poor role model? Surely a better target for the right would be: "Why can't I stereotype an entire culture and call it intirinsically funny, because it's crazy just because it's different? Why can't Foreign People be a joke and a punchline for my amusement anymore?"

My mom hit her younger brother in the head with a frying pan because she saw it on the Three Stooges when they were little. Anyone who tells you that kids were smarter than to emulate TV back in the Old Days is stupid or lying or both.

Pepe was definitely the Looney Tune I hated the most growing up. Even my dumb kid self was like, "Dude, she's not into you, leave her alone!" It didn't help that it was literally a single "joke" somehow spread over a dozen episodes. Warner Brothers quietly shelved his cartoons in the 90's but several Hispanic groups lobbied to get him put back on.

Dumb thing #648 about this dumb cancel culture furor: Pepe Le Pew and Speedy Gonzalez already had little to no part in the first Space Jam movie, if I recall correctly. Gossamer, Rocky and Mugsy, Beaky Buzzard, and Giovanni Jones (the opera guy from Long-Haired Hare) have been CANCELLED from Space Jam 2. Yeah, it's like the "Apu is a racist caricature" thing again. By the time the outrage happened, they'd already almost stopped using the character, except in Pepe le Pew's case there wasn't even any initial outrage to spark the decision to official retire him.

Plus it's not like the character was included in the film and then cut post-facto to "appease the radical left" or whatever. They just decided not to use him. Just like the Dr Seuss estate thing, the folks most pissed off are the ones that normally LOVE talking about how business should get to make whatever decisions they want with no oversight or interference.

Ah but you see they only did it because of pressure from the left, which nobody else would ever dare do to a private business.

"Lazy" has always seemed like such an odd negative characteristic that gets overused by racists/conservatives in general. Are most humans not some degree of lazy? Would we not prefer to do less work over more? Aside from higher pay, which sometimes has diminishing returns anyway, isn't the point of "moving up" so that you don't have to do as much menial work? Also, isn't what we'd describe as "laziness" often how we come up with innovations that make work/life easier? Some dumb shithead who only values work ethic or whatever isn't going to be looking for shortcuts because they probably think it demeans the work.

I think a lot of Boomers and Gen-Xers grew up in a time where large pressure campaigns were kind of required for any decision like this to happen. It's kind of hard for them to wrap their head around studios and producers just... making those decisions themselves, now. They seem to think any even mildly-liberal decision or inclusion was due to an angry bra-burning mob hounding their headquarters day and night. It's why you see accusations of "caving to the left" when cartoons occasionally have gay characters in them. Like, buddy, literally every person in the animation industry is some shade of gay*, there was no outside conspiracy here. *in my experience, which I assume is universal

That's true but they don't typically use it to deride Asian people for some reason. They seem to reserve it for "the darker the skin color, the lazier they are", which I'd honestly never really thought about but GTFO either way with that poo poo anyway. The black and Hispanic coworkers I know who work thankless labor bust their loving asses at thankless tasks. I've come across a ton of lazy white people and the worst ones were always like some relative of a boss or of the owner who acted like they totally worked their rear end off to get there and never seemed to stop deriding everyone else for not working hard enough. The ones whose "Uncle got them the job" often seemed to be ones who were the most outspoken about Carlos the janitor and his lazy habits or poo poo like that.

Keep in mind that 'lazy' also works into the whole Puritan Work Ethic mythos that's so strong in the US. You work hard and you get rewarded. Do good at your job and you'll be promoted up, from mail room boy all the way up to CEO. If this doesn't happen it's not because that's not how reality works, it's because you are lazy. For obvious reasons their lack of success is because of other outside causes.

It's easiest to understand this through the lens of 'The virtuous are deserving of their just rewards'. Laziness always carries the implication that the target is undeserving. It's like how some people blow a fuckin gasket when the topic of white privilege comes up. They feel personally attacked because the least hint of privilege is the same as accusing them of being undeserving.

An overwhelming majority of people are hard working. The problem is that the work available for them that pays money might not be the work that they're passionate about. Which is why someone can spend a whole work day barely scraping through a shift at their lovely minimum wage job and then spend a whole Saturday landscaping a minor city in minecraft brick by brick for 16 hours straight while the day just breezes by in what feels like minutes. Out there are people who's actual job feels like building in minecraft or grinding in an MMO and they just get into it and they will then be perceived as hard working people in general.
