Seems like Nepal is making some new rules and at least trying to enforce some older ones for climbing Everest this season. https://adventureblog.net/2021/03/nepal-has-some-dumb-new-rules-for-climbing-everest-in-2021.html https://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2021/03/09/everest-2021-silly-rules-season-returns-from-nepal-government/ 1. Not allowed to share pictures of people not on ones team unless given permission from them or a government official. 2. Must provide a medical report from a doctor certifying mental and physical aptitude. 3. Must provide an itinerary of their travels plans which includes a debrief with Nepali officials after their attempt. 4. All rescue helicopters must fly to a well-equipped hospital due to a long standing insurance scam. The first one seems mainly because of that famous picture of the traffic jam of climbers headed to the summit taken by Nims in 2019. How they plan on cracking down on that is pretty laughable with cell phone coverage at basecamp. This year is definitely going to be an interesting one with Tibet err China still closed down and Nepal being the only side up. Teams should start making there way to Nepal in the next few weeks and climbing should start somewhere in mid April. Alan Arnette has already been putting together a team list for this years bid on Everest. https://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2021/02/28/everest-2021-team-locations-and-headlines/

I think that one is so that people have to be dropped off at a real hospital that will see if anything is actually wrong with people to prevent insurance companies being scammed from people pretending to be sick, and then being taken by an overly expensive helicopter to a hospital that will look the other way and overcharge.

You mean like a Bahrain Prince and his gift of 2000 Covid vaccines brought into the country illegally? The prince’s group, which includes members of the Bahrain Royal Guard, is returning to Nepal after climbing the 8,163-metre (26,781-foot) Mount Manaslu and the 6,119-metre (20,075-foot) Lobuche in October. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/3/17/mt-everest-bound-bahraini-prince-probed-over-covid-vaccine-gift This keeps getting awesomer in a "sure! why not? Set the controls for the horizon and scream!" kind of way.

I guess with dash cams everywhere the people who would jump in front of cars have to climb Everest now to commit insurance fraud. Real talk though, I guess its people who just chickened out and the hospital would play ball to get insurance to pay for everything?

Apparently trekking companies were offering discount rates if the people got the insurance and then faked that they were sick to get evacuated. Basically a package where they take you up to basecamp, you take some selfies, and then they call the emergency whatever people to bring a helicopter up to take you back down. Plus the helicopters would take multiple people down but charge the insurance companies full price for each person. It's not just some "shitlords get tired of walking" scam it's also the trekking companies pulling the scam and getting kickbacks from the people overcharging. One article said that people were dying because the trekking company wouldn't call any rescue company that didn't also give them a commission.

This might be interesting to those of you who watch that Alone show. This is Norwegian survivalist Lars Monsen spending several months completely alone while he travels across Canada. The subtitles are kind of rubbish, but they're better than nothing I suppose. Check out the whole series, this is just one of the most dramatic episodes when he's realizing that a bear is circling his main camp and won't go away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6kWII7u5jQ

The season has begun, with many teams now at Base Camp, and Camps 1 and 2 being readied. Schedule for this week: Alan Arnette posted:This next week will see multiple teams make their first rotation to Camp 1 and 2. The usual schedule is to level early, as at 3 am for Camp 1, at 19,000′ taking five to eight hours. Arrive at C1 early around sunrise and settle in for a very hot day if there are no clouds. And apparently 3 Russian climbers are missing on Annapurna. Source: https://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2021/04/18/everest-2021-weekend-update-april-17/

Colonel Cancer posted:Can one hypothetically be banned from the mountain? Or can you always go to the manager and get it rescinded Permits are issued specifically to go beyond base camp, so banned from the mountain is the default state. The Nepalese authorities could not issue a permit or in more severe circumstances ban someone from the country it they thought someone was going to climb without a permit.

Oh hey so I started watching ALONE with my wife thanks to this thread, and we’re enjoying it. I LOLed at how predictable it was that the cop in season 1 poo poo his pants and quit after one night. Season 3 has been a lot of fun, though, seeing the cool stuff that the contestants built. It’s not too surprising that after a couple of seasons the contestants have a better sense of how to last; then again Patagonia is so much less WET that it looks easier too.
