I'm looking to get into this game and build up an army over the next few months and I have some questions/need advice. For my first army I’m considering one of the following: Cities of Sigmar Kharadon Overlords Lumineth Realm Lords Disciples of Tzeentch Slaves To Darkness Gloomspite Gitz So if I want to make a 1000 point army for any of these what is it probably going to cost me? I play Underworlds and I know a bunch of the warbands can be used in AoS so that might help me. (I have the Slaves warband, the Tzeentch warband, the Overlords warband, and both Gitz warbands) Also I have a question about the general’s handbook. I know the 2020 one is the most up to date but they still sell the 2019 one in epub format so do they still expect people to use it?

Lucinice posted:I'm looking to get into this game and build up an army over the next few months and I have some questions/need advice. I only know about Gitz, but there's sort of 4 separate armies to choose from there. They don't synergize super well cross sub-faction, so you'll want to focus either on grots, squigs, troggoths, or spiders. You can mix and match, but they are more effective with focus due to the way the buffs generally only apply to one group. Spiders are online order only and not particularly good right now, but the other 3 can do OK. Sigmar has an OK web tool for planning armies. It's not great for permanently tracking your lists, but for what you're doing right now of "I want to figure out what 1k points looks like and costs", it does the job: https://www.warhammer-community.com/warscroll-builder/ The phone app is better for permanent list tracking, with the downside that you can't bring your lists to the PC easily, so you're only editing them on your phone. Battlescribe can do AoS in a pinch, but it kind of sucks for AoS. Also note that the terrain is free from a points perspective, but not from a dollar perspective. You'll want it, but it's $60 MSRP. A good starter grot list would be: 1x terrain $60 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-gitz-bad-moon-loonshrine-2019 1x Loonboss $30 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Loonboss-2019 1x Skragrott the Loonking $36 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Skragrott-The-Loonking-2019 1x endless spells $36 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Endless-spells-gloomspite-gitz-2019 1x sneaky snufflers $40 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Sneaky-Snufflers-2019 1x fanatics $40 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz:-Fanatics-2019 3x grots (can be built a few ways, stabbas with stabbas+moon shields is a flexible option for all 3) $114 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Grots-2019 $320 That gets you two wizards, and the endless spells. Gitz have some great spells, and the endless spells are really cool models for them. Sneaky Snufflers provide a really strong buff to your grots. If you just want the "Mash up the goblins, I don't care about synergy", then you could grab: 1x terrain $60 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-gitz-bad-moon-loonshrine-2019 2x Start Collecting $190 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Start-Collecting-Gloomspite-Gitz-2020 1x Mangler Squigs $80 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Mangler-Squigs-2019 1x squig hoppers $50 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Squig-Hoppers-2019 $380 That is slightly over 1,000 points, but the squig hoppers can be pretty good and can be built two ways, a box gets you 10 and those build in squad sizes of 5. This gets you a bit of everything, you're not going to have great initial synergy, but you can expand out based on what you like more here, Squigs or Troggoths. You'll probably want to look up the White Dwarf rules for how to use the terrain with non-grots, it won't be super useful with the default war scroll.

My 1000 point Lumineth list is the Battle Box that released last summer which goes for around $180 USD Plus 1 box of Wardens https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Lumineth-Realm-lords-Vanari-Auralan-Wardens-2020 Plus 1 box of Sentinels https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Lumineth-Realm-lords-Vanari-Auralan-Sentinels-2020 Plus 1 box of Dawnriders https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Lumineth-Realm-lords-Vanari-Dawnriders-2020 Plus 1 Scinari Cathaller for your general https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Lumineth-Realm-lords-Scinari-Cathallar-2020 So that's something like $390 USD? For exactly 1000 points. Throw in Teclis for $170 or whatever he is and that gets you most of the way to 2000 points Not the cheapest army, but that gets you 2 x 10 Wardens, 1 x 10 Sentinels, 2 x 5 Dawnriders, a Light of Eltharion, and a Cathallar mage.

Lucinice posted:Slaves To Darkness You can have a solid basic 1k STD army (lord on big lizard, 5x knighs w/lances, 2x sorc, 10x warriors, 20x marauders) with the new start collecting box, a box of marauders and two chaos sorcerers. If you have the slaves and tzeentch warbands that should cover your sorcerers so you would only need the start collecting and a box of marauders.

grabbed the skeleton horde that was on an okay discount at my lgs because I absolutely see a newer, more expenive box coming out and looking at the mortarch model the new soulblight's almost certainly going to have Neferata and Mannfred, right?

Does anyone think that GW is going to move away from the "Start Collecting" series with AOS like they're doing with 40k? The combat patrol boxes they are introducing there give you an army in a box to play with straight away, so could something there possibly come along for AOS? Asking more so for the ease of getting people into playing. Actual AOS talk, I'm having a hard time of coming up with a color scheme for my Lumineth. Don't want to do any standard colors, but drawing a blank on anything else.

I like Lumineth in reds

I feel like because both the lumineth models, and the GW color scheme for them, is so clean and stylistically crisp, doing a real grim dark Blanche style paint scheme and kitbashing would be interesting. I’ve no idea how to go about it though. Like completely blood soaked and gory, severed heads and everything, or ghostly or dirty and dark mechanicus inspired or something. I’d probably look through 28 mag for inspiration and do a lot of test models. It might be a little weird since elves already have a dark counterpart though.

I’ve no idea still what I want to do with my KO. I was thinking some Vallejo blue green because it’s real handsome, but I don’t know what metallic to pair with it or what to do for the trim (idk if that’s the right word).

Gold and red plays pretty well with teal/turquoise, like the lizardmen default scheme. I tried a similar scheme on the single space marine I've painted.

The gold is Retributor Armour base -> AP Flesh Tone wash -> Auric Armour Gold layer -> Liberator Gold highlight (could probably skip the Auric and just layer the Retributor again tbh). The Red is Khorne Red base -> Mephiston Red highlight.
